You actually don't need to update it. Unless there's a serious security or mission critical update. There's an old adage that says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

wp needs to slow it the fuck down and get it right the first time, these weekly upgrades are worse than microsoft

90% percent of the upgrades i've seen have some kind of security patch involved.

exactly.... I'd rather run something basic that's stable and secure than a script that needs regular security updates...

There's a difference between a "security" update and a security update. Read the changelog and decide for yourself if it's an update you actually need or not.

We have blogs that still run on wp 2.9 and they run just fine and are still secure.

Ok, here's a more specific answer....

Wordpress MU 2.9

Then download gdpress tools (or insert plugin that does the same thing here) and disable update notifications for wordpress and plugins.
Problem solved.

Regardless of what many people say, or would like to believe, wordpress, or any other software for that matter, does NOT need to be updated every single time they release an update. 95% of the time or more, all those updates are just minor patches that are not mission critical nor will they affect the overall security and stability of your software and/or system/server.
