Nobu, at the Hard Rock, features great sushi and a very interesting menu of other Japanese cuisine.

We tried out Benihana's at the Hilton a couple weeks ago, it fun and decent food, and a pretty amazingly decorated restaurant, but not a much different experience than going to any other Benihana.

I avoid most strip sushi restaurants because they're so overpriced... The only trendy fushion places I've tried were Tao and Little Buddha, both which were great. I haven't had a bad sushi experience in Vegas yet though, every place has been pretty good.

Right on.. Most of the places in the hotels are way over priced...

You crack me up sometimes...

Taste in food is subjective, however, there are several good food/restaurant review companies, such as Zagat, Frommer's, etc, and Nobu's is generally recognized as one of the best sushi / Japanese restaurant's in the entire U.S.

Not sure if you are familiar with the Michelin Guide, but they are considered one of the top food review organizations in the world. To earn a Michelin Star is quite an honor.

Only 15 restaurants in Las Vegas have ever earned a Michelin Star - Nobu is the only Japanese restaurant on that list.

The founder and head chef Masaharu Morimoto, is world-reknown as a chef. He has won several titles as The Iron Chef (you may have seen him on TV).

Here is Masa with Robert DeNiro (who co-own's a Nobu Restaurant in Manhattan, that I visited a few months ago - the food was excellent):

Anyway, since you think Nobu's sushi rates so poorly, perhaps you can tell us of a better sushi restaurant in Vegas.

I am aware of their rep, and I have eaten there on a couple of occasions, but their sushi was blah, IMHO. As far as better sushi in Vegas, I can't say. As was stated above, they are trendy and overpriced.

To be honest, I am not sure that I have ever had what I would consider "great" sushi in Vegas, but I am usually there with goodgirl and she doesn't do sushi, so I haven't actively sought it out.

I haven't eat there in a while but Cafe Wasabi on Sahara is perfect. They have terriyaki dishes for those who aren't down with raw fish and they make good mixed drinks, so if it's sill open it's a pretty good match for what you are looking for.

Nobu is over priced, but if you like more traditional sushi what they offer is good. I'm not a pureist when it comes to sushi- I'll eat the tempura fried, sauce covered rolls as much as anyone- but if you can appreciate a straight up piece of fish, Nobu does offer quality. You're still paying more for the Nobu name than you are for the food, but I wouldn't say it's crap.

Now if you want Sushi Buffet Makino off Decatur is the shizzle. If you live in Vegas check it out. Blows Toady's out of the water.

Almost all the places mentioned above are on the strip or in a TOURIST hotel... They are ALL over priced and the sushi is not that great.. I eat sushi 2-3 times a week and have eaten at most all the places here in vegas.. for me it's Sin City or a place called Spicy Tuna in Henderson.

Nobu has a rep among locals as being shit.. unless you want to throw money away.. just my 2 cents..

However, this thread is not just about Sushi places, it's also about Teppanyaki and there are not may of those in Las Vegas.

http://www.geishasteakhouse.co.kr

That's the place to go. I'm a fan of Benihana but Geisha is better, cheaper, and their Sushi was way better than I expected.

Most of the Sushi I've had in Vegas is mediocre at best.

Dude, read the whole thread . That post was made talking sushi buffet. Is Makino the best sushi place in town... no - but for an "all you can eat" sush bar Makino > Todai.

Take it from a guy who lived in Japan, married into a Japanese family, and had a full-course, Japanese New Year's dinner yesterday.......Sushi on Tropicana is the bomb.

They specialize in exotic rolls, nigiri sushi, and a full Japanese menu for folks that don't do the fish thing. They have plenty of good cold beer, sake and plum wine too. It is about 2 miles east of the Strip on Tropicana.

All you can eat for about $30/person. Everybody that I have taken there returns for more.

If you can't make the Trop location, the also have Sushi on Rainbow.

Makino is not the only place for "All you can eat" sushi in vegas.. Most all the sushi places have "All you can Eat".. Makino used to have two locations but one went out of business now there is just one on decator & flamingo.. Been there.. It's ok.. not great.. Todi is a joke...And I know the owner from the bay area when I lived there.. He has a few places in and around the SF bay area that are great called "Sushi to Todi for".. but the place here in vegas is shit IMO..

Sushi on Tropicana is good.. been there a few times..
Sushi fever is also good..

I prefer I love Sushi off of Eastern/Green Valley. Won several Best of awards and is always packed.

Might be a little far away for what you're looking for though. Good 15 minutes from the strip.

Ahhh, just came back from Sen of Japan (DI & Durango). This thread made me want sushi for dinner. Andre Agassi was there too... 3rd time I've seen him there. They even have a roll named after him hah.

If you're in the area, definitely check this place out.

That's the place to go. I'm a fan of Benihana but Geisha is better, cheaper, and their Sushi was way better than I expected.
Anyone that cites a .kr (Korean) domain for a sushi restaurant, certainly knows their Japanese cuisine.

Not saying that some Koreans can't make sushi better than some Japanese can make Kimchee and Korean barbeque, but seriously, you can't compare Geisha Steak House (a garish name for a Sushi bar) to Nobu's...

Maybe because you are eating at cut-rate Korean sushi bar knock-off joints.

If the issue is cheap, fake (imitation), Japanese food, you have me beat, but in terms of epicurean delights, please join me for lunch or dinner some time.

Baddog dissed Nobu, but honestly I have dined there alongside many other GFYers (WEB Cory, JFK, Honez, etc), and they all had favorable reviews.

I've been out with Baddog for fine Italian and Moroccan meals, and he can attest that I do set fairly high standards when it comes to food.

In some ways I live a simple life, but I figure since eating and sleeping take up so much of a person's life, I try to eat the best food and sleep in the most comfortable place every night (most times at home).

The next time you are in LA, set aside a couple hours and I will introduce you to what I like in sushi.

I brought two people there today. One informed me as we were walking in the door that she did not really care for seafood. The other was more into tempura. By the end of the first roll their attitudes had changed.

I am not sure I could name all the GFYers that I have brought there. It is an extensive list. http://www.pimpspromo.com/persian-ki...addog-go-gu-gu

The last time I went to Nobu (July) was with Due and Jenni. This was after I introduced them to Gu Gu. Due looked at me after the first bite and said, "I know it isn't as good as Gu Gu, but it is better than what I can get at home."

I guess the point is, it is all relative. I had a girl from Sweden the other day tell me she just had sushi and it sucked for her now because she could only compare it to Gu Gu.

WTF is in that Sushi boat?!?

Well, who can argue with gourmet strip mall sushi?

BTW, Gu Gu literally means "loose material" or "miscellaneous ingredients" in Japanese, which is very unlikely a native Japanese person would name a restaurant.

I am not a food snob, so I will be glad to eat at Gu Gu the next time I am down your way, and will give it a fair review, however, I stand by my initial claim, that Nobu provides exquisite, albeit expensive, excellent Japanese cuisine.

You've got a great sense of humor. I almost thought you ere being serious for a minute.

There are dozens of all you can eat sushi bars all around Vegas and both Makiino and Todai are bottom of the barrel type places.

Might be a little far away for what you're looking for though. Good 15 minutes from the strip.

Deej and I have a lunch meeting in Henderson tomorrow. I think we'll check this place out.

Thanks for posting about it.

ummm, the name is not Japanese. I think the guy that opened it is Hungarian or something around that part of Europe. I asked them what Gu Gu meant and it was something they came up with from there. Don't recall the exact story.

As far as strip malls are concerned, I used to be snobbish like that but in the last couple of years I have found that some of the best restaurants I have gone to have been in strip malls. No more paying for a view if I can get better elsewhere.

and I did not say Nobu did not provide good Japanese cuisine, I said their sushi was so-so.

I have nothing against strip mall joints per se - one of my favorite seafood and chop houses in Las Vegas "was" just such a place - Alan Albert's, which I was sadly informed recently closed.

My wife would usually order a 2 lb Maine Lobster, I would get a large cut Prime Rib, and we both ordered a twice baked sour cream potato, and Caesar's salad.

Foodgasm...great wine list, plus the decor was straight out of the Rat Pack.

I shall miss that place...

If you don't mind strip malls (and Eric doesn't mind the hijack), next time you are in the Valley.

Pretty sure they're only open for dinner. 4pm on. So make it a late lunch.
