Arizona shooting thought

Were exactly were are the "cowboys" that have been rallying around their right to walk around AZ with holstered pieces? I am all for the right to bear arms to protect yourself, but it is so ironic that this nut can cap 18 people and nobody stepped up to "protect" themselves.

I agree 100%, I remember hearing so many White Supremacist movements and groups threatening, that if any black man became president all hell would break lose.

Well every single one of them gun toting white boys have proved to be PUSSIES, all no talk and full of shit.

That was my first thought: how did someone get off like 20 shots in such a supposedly gun-toting state?

He had a semi automatic pistol with and extended clip...it takes a couple of seconds to fire that many rounds...which does not give alot of time for anyone to react...but it is being reported that one person may have reacted and possibly is responsible for some of the people being shot. If this is true forensics will establish the facts.

Gun advocates are usually not at places where liberals are speaking. They rally with their base, Sarah Palin speaking is much more safe.

I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner, showing the disapproval ratings of congress and the senate

I'm familiar with Tucson. My mother was actually on her way to the event where the shooting took place, when she heard about it on the radio. The only reason she was not present was because a military event she was at earlier went long.

The gun issue has been discussed ad infinitum, so not going to comment on that.

But a related topic, given the current political climate and threats of violence, what's the potential liability (ie. lawsuits by the victims) of private venues hosting political events?

Safeway's reputation is already getting slightly tarnished from this - not much in the whole scope of things, but anything that dissuades even a small percentage of potential customers is something many businesses seek to avoid.

According to some news articles, some venues already were leery of hosting "Congress on Your Corner" and the like - and now, given the latest shooting, presumably even more places will pass on hosting such political events.

yes the big issue here is whether this will affect political meetings in safeway parking lots.

lesson learned. they don't have to make up a bunch of laws because of this. things happen like this. when you serve the public there will always be someone that doesn't agree with your views.

Kinda funny everyone is going after right wing.... when it's

"Jared Loughner, Alleged Shooter in Gabrielle Giffords Attack, Described by Classmate as "Left-Wing Pothead""

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/val...ed_shooter.php

Not the 1st time, Fort Hood, They tried to say it was a wacko right winger and well we all know who it was there too....

When was the last time you saw a right wing riot?

All riots I have seen are left wing / anarchists....

jared is anti-government, anti-immigration, pro-gold, pro-constitution and shot a democratic congresswoman.

no idea why people would paint him as on the right.

maybe he is an escape goat?

Tucson reminds me a lot of Los Angeles suburbs because it isn't tiny, but it is mostly just suburban sprawl. Old Tucson is just a few blocks, so I'm not sure why it really has a name. Neat during the Gem Show. Fair number of cowboys and folks big on their firearms though. Sorta suburban cowboys but still.

It didn't occur to me that she could have been there, when I first heard the news. After a lifetime of public service, she is nonpartisan and elderly and tends to go to mostly sitdown events like breakfasts and such. But she knows the congresswoman from other events and because they are both active in the same alumni association. She called me to let me know she was okay and it really creeped me out retroactively. Like, if her friend's son had half an hour less to say about military service and she could have been gone just like that. I definitely did not sleep too well last night, thinking about it. So, yeah, very creepy.

In all of these situations it usually boils down to the fact that idiots like this clown should have been locked up for being a shit head long before he did this. The kids that shot up Columbine should have been in mental institutions years before going nuts on other kids. If you want to act like a fuck head, fine by me. But you are going to do it inside a mental ward. Not in my kids school!

that sounds cool. we can easily afford to lock up all the kids who act funny.

probably the next great government created growth industry. like prisons and the drug wars. we can call it the war on crazy, have crazy courts, crazy lawyers, and hire lots of crazy guards with full bennies and pensions and nice salaries.

as the economy stratifies, we gotta give the guys who used to do construction some kind of job right?

one thing you dont wanna do is pay the teachers. fuckin lazy bums just stand around while all the crazy kids shoot everybody. prison guards tho, now thats an honorable profession, no government fat cats there.

the simple fact is that's not a situation in which people carrying could realistically have shot down that shooter before he was able to fire a full clip into a crowd.

he was tackled when he tried to reload, which is as reasonable and effective a response as you could hope for.

if a carrier had been close, in the position to take a legitimate shot, yes they might have shot him before he emptied the clip, but the odds of that occuring are low.

and in this case, the odds won out, the clip was emptied, and he was tackled.

all the better that he was taken alive.

oh, and you're a liar as far as their being any sort of protest at the rally. (unless you can produce a link, of course)

The cross fire would have been HUGE had anyone else pulled a weapon.

Better there were not any nut bags armed at that scene.

Neat during the Gem Show. Fair number of cowboys and folks big on their firearms though. Sorta suburban cowboys but still.
tucson is phoenix's baby sister. lots of cowboy films used old tucson for scenes

tombstone with kurt russell one of the greats had scenes from old tucson.

maybe society should be locked up as these kids do not start out like that.

What killed me was, first of all, that he shot and killed a 9-year-old little girl. There is just no excuse for that no matter how politically riled up you are.

Then, to read the details that he had been kicked out of college for crazy behavior. The school called his parents in and told them he couldn't return until they provided a statement from a health professional that he wasn't a danger to himself or his fellow students.

And after that he was still able to go out and buy a gun.

Nice. Go read some articles. It's pretty obvious he wasn't a Democrat. Not that I'm defending either side. I think the dual party system is short-sighted and no longer fits the needs of our country.

I agree that self defence is right. Shooting innocent people is wrong. It's hard to protect yourself when everything moves too fast. You would need fast reflexes and quick reactions.

bullshit. people shit their pants when something real happens. even soldiers typically don't shoot to kill, most shoot high or not at all..most people would just panic and run. not take the time to take the gun out of the holster, take off the saftey, aim, fire. by that time the guy could of taken out 10 people including the guy with the gun.

keep trying to put labels on everyone and put them in neat little boxes. it works out perfectly! no one could ever *not* be either right or left..

No doubt. If anyone had a weapon and tried to take this guy out, I think there would be more people injured than there already was. You can't just start firing off rounds into a crowd and expect to hit the target......
