It's loud and uncomfortable, but you should feel great after it's done.

I haven't had it done in a long time, but it is a good thing afterwards, and not unpleasant.

Not at all bad as people make out.
You'll be able to hear a pin drop after it's done...

Slight exaggeration but your hearing becomes super sharp afterwards. Had it done when I was 9.

I used to work in a place with loads of ear specialists and they said never to use the tips as it can push the wax closer to the ear drum. What you're meant to do is put olive oil in your ear until it softens the wax up and the wax falls out naturally.

Using antibiotics is madness as it doesn't speed up recovery ear infections and makes you more likely to get more in the future. They kill all the good bacteria in your body and it will take you one year to get them back. However, someone does get to make some money from those antibiotics, so probably best for them to keep quiet about the fact they shouldn't be used for this

they will just pump water in there until the wax comes out not really painful at all
usually they even ask you to put drops of oil like a day or two before you go get flushed

btw never use qtips they are bad for you
just go for an ear cleaning every 6months or 12months depending on how much you produce

by flush do you mean as in like with water? definitely don't do that, that will most likely lead to an infection...

I'm seeing someone who works for an audiologist and what fills in most of her day is having to clean out ears and treat people who have experimented with bad cleaning practices with their ears!

Ask for a referral to see an audiologist and have them clean it out, they use small tools and it is very safe and quick.

Things that don't work and you should never use on your ears:

q-tips - yes, it clears out wax but by doing that your body just creates twice as much wax, why? because it needs it for protection and proper function!

ear candles - this one is completely bogus, cleans nothing and also can burn the inside of your ears causing damage (she treats about 10 people with burns from candles a week!)

hydrogen peroxide - I even used to swear by this one, but this one leads to the same problems you get when you use q-tips.. removes ALL the wax and just makes your body produce more...

water rinses or flushes - cause ear infections by forcing bacteria into vulnerable parts of the ear, yet another thing wax normally protects you from ;)

I had my ears flushed 10 years ago. It's strange feeling, but not painful. After the procedure you ears will feel so clean and you can hear everything so crystal clear...you might feel as though everything is too loud

Also remember the ear wax is there for a good reason, it protects your ear from dust, bacteria, viruses, other microorganisms, and other foreign particles to prevent them from entering and damaging the ear.

By getting rid of your ear wax and your good bacteria (by use of antibiotics) you're going to be walking around without much protection

Flushing doesn't hurts that much, it's just disturbing for a few minutes, at least in my case it was like that. I head ear infection for about 3 weeks, couldn't hear the shit and the pain wasn't cool either. Antibiotics helped me, flushing was only addition to therapy. Cleaning ears with q-tips or any other sticks is dangerous and not necessary. Use just a warm water or baby oil (to soften the wax).

I had it done when I was a kid and had a severe ear infection. To this day I remember that it hurt like a mother!

Now we are also talking about 30 years ago, so I am going to hope that the technology has gotten better.

I go to the ear doc once a year. They have a suction apparatus that sucks the stuff out.
Or they can use some metal tools to scrub it out.
You will not need to "have it flushed", though.

You went to the wrong doctor.

My wife has.

One morning about two years ago my wife is making breakfast and suddenly passes out cold, banging her head on the way down. Wakes up seconds later, not sure what happened. Seems okay, we eat, an hour later, bam, down again. She has a heart condition so we rushed her into the ER. Turns out it's ear wax.

Some people make too much ear wax, and instead of getting cleaned out when they use a qtip it pushes wax further into the ear. Clog up your ear and it fucks up your balance, to the point where you pass out. She was bed ridden for a week.

It affected her over Christmas too. This time no passing out. But we bought one of those kits to clean your ears out.

i just had mine done. its not too bad. they'll just use a syringe full of warm water and squeeze it out at a high pressure. its sort of gross to see the big pieces of wax come out.

I've had this done a few times over the years. It's not bad. Isn't uncomfortable at all and feels great afterwards. You can hear so much better.

The last time I got this done (two years ago) the nurse who was doing it was super hot so I was mega embarrassed. Flushing nasty wax and shit out of a guy's ear isn't exactly a turn-on to a chick. She told me it was one of the worst parts of her job and that made me feel especially shitty.

Don't listen to this, it's bullshit. I used to get my ears flushed every 6 months as one of my ear canals is weird and fills up with wax pretty badly, which given I have tinnitus is torture (the ringing is magnified when the wax closes over). Never had an infection from it. Then again my doctor never used storm drain water from the gutter out the front so yay for science.
There is nothing wrong with getting your ears flushed. Given you only really do it when there is an issue it's fine and doesn't do anything untoward. It's only going to promote more wax if you do it monthly or something crazy.
You should have had it flushed on the spot and probably gone without the antibiotics (unless you also scratched your ear drum with the q-tip on top of compacting the wax). Antibiotics aren't going to fix compacted wax.

If you are going to use q-tips, the only "good" way is to only just insert them and very angled so the tip is pointing at the back of your head, circle them, so you're collecting wax from the "sides" near the entrance not deeper in the canal where you are going to risk damage. And you can only really do it as maintenence. Once your ears are full you're going to push the wax further in almost no matter what.

I had this done a couple weeks ago. Was a little uncomfortable but not painful. Prolly a good idea to get it done once every 6 months or so. You can do it yourself with sterile water, trick is to not squirt it in too hard or you will bust your eardrum

yeah its bullshit advice coming from someone who works for and audiologist who has been working with ears for over 50 years...

but you used to get them flushed all the time right? so that makes you far more qualified mos def...

by driving a car does that make you a mechanic too?

Hahahah and being a receptionist at a mechanics means you can fix cars right? Oh thats right an audiologist has sweet fuck all to do the topic at hand other than generally being about ears. You're actually more like the receptionist at a crash testing centre.

You said something demonstrably wrong. Flushing your ears does NOT "most likely lead to an infection" Don't blame me for pointing out your demonstrable bullshit.

Feel free to pipe up on the next "I think my kid might be deaf" or "how long will a hearing test take" thread though.

I've had it done a couple of times and it's far from unlpeasant, not bad at all for me. All they did here anyways was take some water and mix in some peroxide, then take a big syringe with a little point on the end and spray it in my ear to blast it out.

I don't know wtf the rest of you have been doing but it's painful and extremely unpleasant to have a jet of water shot into your ear. I'd suggest finding an ENT that has the little digger tool that can just pull out the ball of wax, flushing will just push it in further which is what happened to me.
I've had 4 ruptured ear drums, 2 sets of tubes and countless ear infections, the key is to go to a specialist and they'll fix you up a regular doc isn't going to have the tools or skill.

If you go to a general doctor they will do a warm water flushing thing, if you go to an ear doctor they typically have these little vacuums that are painless, just loud for a minute. Man you can hear awesome after that is done!

I second this. I had a doctor flush my ears once when I was younger and it was uncomfortable and afterwards I had some stubborn water in one of my ears. As an adult I went to an ear nose throat specialist and they used a tiny little vacuum tool and it was awesome. Way better than the flush.

Also, I'm not sure how "doctor recommended" these are as if you're not careful you could probably fuck yourself up pretty good, but I use one of these now:

Works great. Doc's recommend you don't mess w/ your ears at all and just let the earwax expell itself naturally, but if you can't leave well enough alone I've found these to do the job. They are super cheap and seem to be avail at most asian groceries. You can't just jam it in your ear like alot of people do with qtips, but it removes wax w/o pushing any inn deeper and clogging up your ears.

I think you can use a candle and save a trip to the doc. They have doing it for centuries this way. Google it.

I had this problem, terrible pain once in my ear, I used a water-pik to clean it out, it was the most amazing experience to see all the junk that came out. Probably not safe though.

Ear candles are 110% bullshit.

fris,

My sister had it done and it worked wonders for her. Her reason being she couldn't hear too well. Turns out, from cleaning and over time, the wax built up like yours deeper in. Now, the other day I was cleaning with a q-tip and happened to push in too much to the point of pretty damned noticable pain. Instant blood. I can hear, just muffled and it feels like a gland behind my ear but more towards my neck is all swollen. Going to the ear/nose/throat doc maybe tomorrow or asap and getting it flushed and checked out. I've had a flush once before, didn't hurt one bit. Good luck over there.
