A massive book store disappeared from my nearest town a couple of years ago. Apart from WH Smiths I can't think of any shop selling books now.

I guess more and more people are turning to the internet to order books etc. I know for a fact I haven't been to buy/rent a book for years now

I always thought Borders was a bit expensive.

We have Bookmans here.. used bookstore, ton of magazines, music, used game stuff, some other crap. It's cheaper than Amazon which is great, but it has smelly hippies that hang around all day.... so you never know what type of whiff you'll be getting with your discounts.

Although independent from the original parent company, Borders in the UK closed up shop about a year ago.

I prefer Borders to Barnes and Noble, but the prices need to be more competitive for sure. I used to take my kids to Borders on the weekend to hang out and we'd always buy a few books, but as I started budgeting more I realized the used book store and Amazon were giving me more for my money. So for the ambiance we just go to a coffee shop with our 1/2 price books.

ebook sales have overtaken print at amazon now. brick and mortar book stores will be gone in five years aside from a few speciality shops.

Yeah borders was expensive. Hows B and N doing? Loved going there. Hope they are smart and start pushing the Social idea a bit more.

This comes as no surprise and was expected for some time. The truth is no one is buying books any more - No one wants to cough up $30 or $40 for a book. Not when you can go to your local library and read it for free...

Daughter has a kindle and just downloads everything now, I use to buy her about 20 books a year from Barnes and Noble, it was an easy present, just give her a gift card!

I always liked the local borders. plus they have seattle's best coffee

hate to see it go. but i do buy more books online as well and how they can keep profitable running big stores like that in this day and age is probably impossible.

It's kinda like the demise of DVD sales - everything is moving toward the digital age. Should have taken a look at Netflix or even the Kindle to see where they could begin to compete.

I have an Ipad and I can read Wikipedia on the crapper. Seriously. I"m a huge WWII buff and I can spend the rest of my life reading about it on Wikipedia.... I have hundreds of books about it, but every day I learn something new on line about it.

Not to mention I have a huge library right up the street. No way I'm paying $30 for a book I'll read once when I can read it for free and not feel guilty about tossing it out five years from now.

What? I know a countless number of people that buy book's nonstop. They buy from cheaper places, Borders has always been very expensive. Libraries may be free but they don't always have the latest books and a lot of people simply don't like going to them. A standard paperback is not $30-40 either.

Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants think about that
