Nothing beats the sound of old vinyl!

My dad was clearing out his attic and gave me crates, and I mean CRATES of old vinyl records dating back to 1949 (oldest I've found so far). Both 12" and 7" and a lot of classics. We filled an entire van, top to bottom moving them to my studio. I've been cataloging and listening to them on a restored antique 1920's phonograph all day. Talk about Zen, it doesn't get any better than this!

Something about the simplicity of the old days, or how simple I assume they would be since I wasn't alive, is just calming. The crackling of the static and perpetual loop of the needle stuck in a deep groove is magical.

Fuck MP3s, CDs, DVDs, BluRays, and 3D. You have to appreciate where you came from before you can really understand where you're going.

On a side note, I think he has a very valuable collection. Several crates were nothing but unopened Elvis stuff. The Elvis stuff that was opened is either playing or in queue to play on my phonograph.

I eat my steaks Pittsburgh rare, that's about as close to raw as possible. It sure does bleed like a dying animal while I'm devouring it. Even without the sear, I could eat a raw steak if it were warmed up or even room temp. It's the raw and cold that fuck with my head.

Records are a rare case where the technology still holds up today, if done right. (for sound quality, not convenience)

Most of the time you experience old tech from your past and realize how bad it sucks, for example.... cassettes.

I still have a bunch of cassettes and I did have one last double cassette deck in my house that I could use to listen to them. They truly sounded like shit. It finally died last week and I threw it in the trash.

Good riddance to horrible technology. Now I have this rack of old cassettes that are sitting there with nothing capable of playing them, and I highly doubt I'll be purchasing another cassette deck (if they even still make them).

However some high end audio companies still make record players and they can cost thousands of dollars. But I've never seen a high end cassette deck before.

I hear ya. The thing about 8-track and cassette tapes is that they were only speed bumps between vinyl and digital. If stored properly, vinyl and CD will last a hell of a lot longer than cassette tapes that were made out of looping magnetic strips. Tapes eventually degrade over a very short span of time and become useless. I had cassette tapes for one reason and one reason only...to make some hot mix tape for the chick I was banging for the month. Nothing says you're my girl more than a mix tape of: Journey, Boston, Prince, Color Me Bad, Luther Vandross, Ralph Tresvant, PM Dawn, and Boys to Men.

Actually I prefer CDs but I also prefer tube amplifiers over transistor bullshit.

If you want 100% honey then you have to have this:

I am curious as you say you are using a restored 1020's phonograph, what amplifier and speakers are you listening to?

if you are using a 1920's phonograph to listen to records dating to 1949 you are probably damaging your records and not getting the full sound that was intended. Get a 50s-60s record player, a good one, you will notice a difference

Thanks JFK. The restored 20's phonograph is completely rebuilt to today's standards (the drive, the needle, etc.). The only thing that is 1920's is the outer shell. It was beyond repair so it had to be completely rebuilt.

PompousJohn, see above. It has the original horn but it's been fully rebuilt. There are no amplifiers or speakers per se.

Oh he didn't "give" them to me as in here son, these are yours. He gave them to me to catalog and find out the values. They're still his...well his until he dies. Then they'll probably become mine, but I'm not looking forward to receiving them anytime soon. I want my pops to stick around. He's a badass!
