Sending wire to Canada from states question

I'm in the states and I am sending a wire to Canada and chase requires a 8 digit transit number for the recipient in Canada.

However the Canadian recipient only gave me a
5 digit transit number
and a 3 digit institution number

Are you suppose to combine the two? anyone know?

Canada uses an 8-digit code (with a hyphen after the fifth digit) called a bank transit number. The first 5 digits identify the branch; the last 3 digits identify the financial institution.

another tip:

if you are ever sending a bank wire, and the swift code is not long enough / enough characters then add X's to the end until you have enough characters to complete the transaction.
