If the room is well lit, go with an LED-LCD with a matte surface. That will be very good for resisting glare. If the room is dark and the tv will be watched mainly at night with the lights off, then go with a glossy screen plasma.

LCD or LED. Plasmas suck. With an LCD the image is right there on top of the screen like it is on a hi-res computer monitor. An LCD also doubles as a computer monitor btw if you hook up a media server to it. With plasmas, you are essentially looking through a glass window at the video image behind the glass. Watch an LCD and plasma showing the same tv show side by side and there is no comparison.

I ALWAYS watch my movies with the room as dark as possible. That said plasma is the best for me, plus it's way more affordable. A 50" 1080p Samsung is only $800 at Best Buy. Nice.

I have both and I prefer the plasma. The LED does have a nice picture though and you can you carry it in your house by yourself and set it up. A plasma is real pain to move around.
Just a quick note, plasma has always been the superior technology and LCD has been trying to match it. With LED they are very close but the reason LCDs have been pushed is because they are cheaper and easier to produce and ship. Now, your personal preference may be different, but plasma is the better imaging technology even though most people think it's old or outdated. Glare can be an issue with plasma, but viewing angle is an issue with LED. So if you have a big room with chairs off to the side, they won't be used for watching an LED. So you have decide which is better for your room and viewing style.

I have a 55 inch LEd, and a 32 incher for my monitor.
Great picture. They say the blacks are better on Plasma, but unless you're a die-hard cinephile tech freak, then don't worry about it. Plasma is a dying technology. Don't buy into that. It's also super heavy, generates a lot of heat and sucks up more power. Not a smart buy.

plasma has the best picture quality hands down, people who say otherwise don't know much about tv's.... you only buy LED if your room is bright

I bought a 42" Panasonic Viera plasma from Best Buy back in December for a decent price. It's in a bright room and the image looks great, and the viewing angle is pretty decent. Watching it next to LCDs and LEDs in the Best Buy store, it just seemed like the Plasma refresh rate and image were so much better. I have no clue if that's true or not, but just a matter of opinion from what I saw.

I just ordered a 60 inch Plasma for my basement, its going to be brightish during the day, but fuck it, the colours and so on, on Plasma are just way better. Most of my hardcore tv watching will be at night anyway. I have a 46inch Sony Bravia LED in my formal living area and I love it, but couldn't justify paying an extra $800 over the Plasma for the 60inch Version.

I don't know what the fuck you people could be seeing when watching a plasma that is SO much better than LED.
LED looks so damn amazing that at my Christmas party almost everyone was creaming over the picture quality. I think I gave about 10 picture demos with a Blu Ray that night. Some of them actually own the same set now, just because they were so floored. is this one those "vinyl is so much better" things?

If you go with LED try to get a local dimming set instead of the edge-lit ones. Blacks are better and more uniform compared to an edge-lit, which will often have splotches of uneven light across the screen just because of the how the screen is lit.

If you have to buy now then its got to be a Samsung 9000 series LED if you can wait 12 months then you can have a TV that will beat the shit out of any set on the market today
See below I brought a small 46inch 9000 Samsung which will be replaced with 64 inch OLED when they are out. Key advantage OLED Televisions Superior Picture Quality With more vivid, lifelike colors, better representation of fast action video, wider viewing angels, and much higher contrast ratios, Organic light emitting diode Tvs dramatically enhance the viewing experience. Ech frame is sharp, ech detail pops! Thats because this display technology naturally refresh up to a thousand times faster than an LCD. Their color gamut can exceed NTSC standards. And this displays feature almost 180 degree viewing angle and in inherent contrast ratio of > 1.000.000:1. High Efficiency This display technology use power more efficiently than existing LCD and PDP HDTVs. With Tvs getting larger, they are becoming an increasingly energy intensive consumer of electricity. Purchasing power efficient Tvs will save money and critical energy resources. Very thin Much thinner and lighter weight than existing PDPs and LCDs, this displays can be the thickness of a pane of glass, and with gains made in flexible electronics could get even thinner. They can also be lightweight enough so that even large OLED screens will be easily moved or hung on the wall. Cost effective While the first Organic displays hitting the market today are expensive, those prices will fall dramatically as the technology matures and volume ramps. Ultimately, OLED televisions will prove more cost effective because they require fewer materials and fewer processing steps than LCDs and PDPs. As the process matures and larger-scale manufacturing capacity is in place, this displays will be as cost effective, if not mor so, than current products. Samsung at SID-2010 OLEDs will be the next big thing in displays! At the SID-2010 Sang-Soo Kim, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Samsung Mobile Display says that OLED is the future of displays. Both in mobile phones and in the TV market, Samsung expects to sell 1 Billion OLED Displays in 5 Years. Samsung invest $2.2 billion to the 5.5 Gen OLED factory which starts production in 2012.

The prices on Plasma TVs are very reasonable these days too. Personally I think the picture on the LEDS is incredibly sharp, and for a gaming TV, I say LED. You can get a great 0" Plasma these days for right around $1000 though, the picture is nice, and the colors vivid. You really can't go wrong with the Plasma right now. With passive 3D on the way, and new technology just around the bend, I'd say you will probably be able to grab a good LED in that size range for right around the same price in about a year though.

I've been looking for TV's for myself lately and I found that LED is the way to go. Worth the extra bucks and worth getting a tv thats internet ready. I love my plasma too but the sheer engergy comsumption of my plasma far exceeds a LED that I am looking at right now.

Plasma offcoz
LED is just other way to spread light evenly over the screen.. Plasma has pixels that emit light them-self, black is black as pixel state is off..there is no light passing trough any pixels so the screen can show real black. Viewing angle on plasma is much better as well and color seem much more life like.. I have 3 LEDS screens to compare and i would not go for anything else than Plasma.. The LCD's are nice and seem to have better frame-rate with games though, but for watching movies in darkened space i prefer plasma.. For anyone that is willing to take some time to understand how LCD/PLASMA works will understand plasma is the obvious choice. Light passing trough a pixel will never give 100% black..which is the case with ANY LCD..LED is just the way light is distributed evenly under the LCD layer. Plasma doesn't need any back-light as the pixel itself emits the light so black is just an OFF state of the pixel.

LED.
Awesome picture, lower power consumption and does not heat up a room as much a the plasma does (which have an terrible life expectancy). The LCDs are nice and a great cheap alternative. |

yep, exactly, instead of TL lighting they use LED'S now to evenly distribute light behind the pixels.
LCD means light is passed TROUGH each pixel, even when pixel is BLACK there is still light passing trough them so black is not possible! Black can only be done when NO light passes the LCD which isn't the case yet. Plasma is the only way to show real black as there is no light passing the pixels as they emit light themselves. If pixels emit NO light you have real black!

I bought a 50in plasma a few years back, and wish I would have gotten the LCD or LED. I can't pause anything without turning it off in fear that it will burn into the screen and it gets pretty hot.

BTW, there is NO LCD or LED, LED = LCD. LED is just the way LCD pixels are back-lid Few years ago LCD screens were back-lid by a TL tube on the far edges of the screen resulting in dark spots in the center of the screen. With small screens this problem wasn't such big deal, but when higher res screens became mainstream the worse the problems got. The only thing LED does is spread light evenly over a large surface area so all areas of the screen look as bright as the rest.

before my house burned down a few weeks ago I had a Pioneer Kuro 151FD.. 65" plasma.. THE BEST tv ever made. The picture on it was amazing. Unfortunately pioneer doesn't make tvs anymore but panasonic got their engineers and is making way better tvs. the new panasonic V30 is suppose to be almost as good as the kuro tvs
We had a LED-LCD in the master bedroom and frankly, it sucked compared to the plasma down stairs but we are comparing a 6500 tv to a 1000 tv.
