Can I ask a stupid question here? I'm not a nuclear engineer or anything, but did it seem wise to build a power plan on the fucking ocean in an area that is prone to tsunamis? I mean, I know they always build power plants near "sources of water", but if you build one on the fucking coast in a tsunami zone your just asking for trouble.

But yes, I'm ready. I went through the Loma Pereta earthquake in 1989, three days with no power, food, and then water. I was stocked up on canned goods then and still to this day. We also live near train tracks, and I'm always worried that we'll have to leave without much notice so we have over night bags packed and stored in the garage.

Fortunately FEMA saw this one coming, like when they arrived in New York the evening before 9/11. Less than 1 month ago they purchased $1 Billion of Dehydrated Food

I'm about as far as you could get in either direction from Japan so I'm not concerned with immediate damage to me or my family. But the environmental and economic impacts are going to be huge!

But I do have a small emergency kit (food, water, radio, batteries, identification, etc) because I live in a seismic zone

This doesn't surprise me at all. FEMA has these camps set up all around the country. Some people think they plan on putting us in prison, but the truth is more like if a nuclear power plant melt down someplace in the US we might need to move and house hundreds of thousands of people - instantly.

Lots of canned food and bottle water here. Hot water heater holds 40 gallons, most people forget about that. I guess I could use the pool water if needed, I know how to purify it.

I keep the vehicle above 1/2 tank at all times, no need to get stuck at a gas station trying to get out of town. I've been planning on buying a small portable generator for a multitude of uses and as an emergency backup.

No need to buy shit that lasts for years, just rotate out the stuff you have and be sensible. Being prepared for anything is a good idea, never know when a natural disaster or an extended loss of power could happen.

Basically anywhere there is shoreline is prone to a tsunami. Earthquakes arent the only geological event that can cause them, underwater landslides have been known to trigger a tsunami.

Well, things are progressing. On German news, they are saying that the next 48 hours will decide the fate of the reactor(s). It does not look good, though. Lastest news in the live ticker was that they are evacuating another 28000 people.

Okay dummies...

Can we put our fear-mongering aside for a second and do some thinking? This nuclear disaster is localized in Japan. Yeah, it's a disaster -- really, there's no evidence as to how anyone outside of Japan, or the immediate Asian peninsula could be significantly effected by this disaster.

Two issues can change that:
1) If the reactors completely blow the fuck up, throwing all the nuclear material into the air (no, this hasn't happened yet).
2) If the cores catch on fire and they're unable to put them out. (no, this hasn't happened yet).

And, for all you Fox-News loving retards out there, here's how you should interpret the radiation exposure figures they're throwing around: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_equivalent_dose

Ugh. Relax. As of right now, i'd bet more people have been hurt by the inability to access clean water.
