What I do know is that scientist have been wrong before and totally dismissed
things touted by others that were later scientifically proven to be true.

Ah yeah that's not really a great way to judge pollution, trash maybe. Problem is most of the stuff that is highly toxic isn't visible to the naked eye. That's why people get lead poisoning eating off plates they think are "clean" when they are really leaching lead into their food.
