On March 11, 2005, Al-Quds Al-Arabi published extracts from Saif al-Adel's document "Al Quaeda's Strategy to the Year 2020".[40][41] Abdel Bari Atwan summarizes this strategy as comprising five stages:

1. Provoke the United States into invading a Muslim country.
2. Incite local resistance to occupying forces.
3. Expand the conflict to neighboring countries, and engage the U.S. in a long war of attrition.
4. Convert al-Qaeda into an ideology and set of operating principles that can be loosely franchised in other countries without requiring direct command and control, and via these franchises incite attacks against countries allied with the U.S. until they withdraw from the conflict, as happened with the 2004 Madrid train bombings, but which did not have the same effect with the 7 July 2005 London bombings.
5. The U.S. economy will finally collapse under the strain of too many engagements in too many places, similarly to the Soviet war in Afghanistan, Arab regimes supported by the U.S. will collapse, and a Wahhabi Caliphate will be installed across the region.

The cost of conducting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan pushed the budget into the red during the presidency of George W. Bush. The situation deteriorated after the beginning of the financial crisis when the government adopted measures such as stimulus packages, financial bailouts, the need to support liquidity in Treasuries, etc. Moreover, early in December 2009 it has increased its nonproductive expenses by approving 30,000 troops to be sent to fight in Afghanistan.

All economists agree that one of the basic nonmonetary reasons of inflation is the existence of significant nonproductive government expenses such as military expenses.

Of course you can thank Bush's back-to-back administration for that. Is there anything he did good in those 8 years? Talk about walking right into their fucking trap. Iraq is now so fucked up that it's about to implode, and you may soon see chaos there worse than anything under Hussein.

We'd be ready to compete in the future global economy, as opposed to churning out a bunch of retards that will barely be able to function on their own in the real world.

Look at all of the money wasted on that fucking Joint Strike Fighter, which will never see combat most likely. The money spent on that program could fix most of the problems with our education system.

Actually if you look at the numbers, the states that spend more per student test scores are at the bottom and those who spend less are at the top. Money is not the problem with the education system.

Is anyone aware it's safer for US Marines to be station in Afghanistan and Iraq than it is to be stationed in here at home in the US? We have some idea that we are being bled to death. We aren't. How many Iraqis and Afghans have we killed in the process? The only thing al-Qaeda has accomplished is having two of their countries over run and their governments removed, while we kill them by the hundreds of thousands. That sounds like a sure victory for al-Qaeda.

The Soviet Union wasn't bled dry by Afghanistan. The Soviet Union didn't collapse because of Afghanistan; The Soviet Union collapsed because it was a doomed system.

Non-sense. We throw tons of money at education, and it keeps getting worse. To fix education, you need to get rid of the public sector unions, and the politicians do not have the stomach for that.

Tons of money to education means 1 set of 30 books for 200+ students to share. This is the how it is at my sons school and he is expected to study from that book for tests and such, but not allowed to take the book out of the classroom. 40+ kids in 1 class with 1 teacher barely out of high school because she will work cheaper then the teacher with actual experience.

But the school that was closed down last year in my area has a awesome new blacktop and other yard equipment that is fenced off so nobody uses it. Lot's of money wasted, but the education needs better finding and better decision makers on the board.
