Competing with .XXX...

for your hard earned domain investment budgets, will be

"In 2012 the next stage in the Internet's revolution begins with the arrival of new top level domains (TLDs) such as .sfo, .berlin, .nyc, .web, .eco, .shop, .gay, .xxx, .hotel, .film, .radio, .green, .site, .sport and .music."

ICANN, the organization in charge of domain names, is planning a dramatic rewriting of the rules for web addresses that could reduce the overwhelming importance of the .com extension. Under new ICANN rules, groups and organizations will be able to apply for new Internet extensions (the part after the “dot” in a web address). The new domain extensions are officially called “new generic top level domains” (new gTLDs).

Consider the opportunities that new domains will offer organizations, businesses, and individual domain owners, as well as end-users. Registering a .green domain for your brand sends the unmistakable signal that your company is dedicated to preserving the environment. New eCommerce organizations are assured of data security with a .secure domain for their checkout processes. And new musicians can launch their careers with .music domains.

We estimate that the first group of new gTLDs ("first round") will be available by October 2012.

interesting to me that the first sentence of that points out the 'overwhelming importance' of the .com ext. I dont see that being watered down anytime soon. typing .com at the end of a domain name is second nature to most people

A lot of these new gTLDs can be pre-registered through United Domains
https://www.uniteddomains.com/

I don't think they're going away but I don't see them devaluing .com anytime soon either. Still, way to flood the market ICANN!

.com will always remain king but it is good to see some alternatives to the (useless) .xxx tld because that will make it more difficult for Lawley to pretend that the .xxx tld is the only place for responsible adult site owners.

.com will always be king. XXX will be worthless because entire countries and every business in the world will block them.

well they will have a lot of hurdles to overcome in re-educating the public when it comes to these new extentions. personally i think its a bad business move for a company to have say lawns.green instead of lawns.com. sure it would be cheaper but how many people are going to automatically type .com or lawns.green.com or something like that? and companies who use the .whatever as their main url..what do you put in front of it? www? no one uses www anymore..hmm.

not to mention they will be about 100k or so for one of these .whatever extentions.

ICANN gonna allow .sex, .porn, .ass, .fuck, owned by seperate private companies? That would be true competition for .XXX.

But ofcourse, that would defeat the whole purpose of an adult only tld monopoly.
