Tetanus is infection of the nervous system with the potentially deadly bacteria Clostridium tetani (C. tetani).
Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Spores of the bacteria C. tetani live in the soil and are found around the world. In the spore form, C. tetani may remain inactive in the soil, but it can remain infectious for more than 40 years.

Infection begins when the spores enter the body through an injury or wound. The spores release bacteria that spread and make a poison called tetanospasmin. Yep. in fact I keep my pretty upto date. You should have one about every 7 years. I will be getting one again this year.

You should probably go and get one. I'd love to say I would, but I wouldn't until it was infected. I don't usually go to the Dr unless I am dying or need to renew my diabetes meds, otherwise I wait until I am just about on my death bed before going to see a Dr. But you probably should go and get that done.

In Hungary this is not a question, you MUST get the shot after injuries like this. Weird...
