I want to do something like this

RedirectMatch 301 (.*)\.html$ http://www.example.com$1.php

This is the URL people will click

http://photosofclouds.com/clouds/GHOSTS_Buddha.png

GOES TO

http://photosofclouds.com/index.php?...enwidth= 1024

http:/photosofclouds.com/index.php?showimage=GHOSTS_Buddha.png&screenwidth= 1024

There's no real directory /clouds

It's understandable that regular expression would trip you up after inventing some machine code thingy in a 6 inch wide jpg.

not sure what the $ is after html and the 1 is for.

I can go to alt.www.webmaster but they take a day or two not many gurus around

$ means : ending with html , in this case any filename ending with .html
$1 = (.*) you can substitute anything between the parentheses with $1 (variable).
