Network Solutions price increase.

Are they serious? They're already the most expensive.. Time to move the few remaining ones..

--------

Dear Valued Network Solutions® Customer,

This email is to notify you that, beginning in July 2011, we'll be implementing a price change for renewals of the following domain extensions: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us and .name.

There will be a $3.00 increase per domain for one year terms. Again, updated pricing affects renewals only, not new domain name registrations.

We appreciate your continued business. Should you have any questions, please contact Customer Support at 1-877-307-1435.

Sincerely,

Network Solutions® Customer Support

What are they right now? I've never used 'em. I assume the additional $3 has to be at least a 15% increase, which is crazy.

A lot of big companies still have their domains at NetSol from when they were the only game in town.

NetSol is also very good at being a domain registrar and not trying to be content police. 4chan, for instance, is registered at Network Solutions.

PROTIP: You can get sane renewal prices (~$9 or so) by calling them.

Who regulates these prices?

Recently NameSecure.com jumped from $7.95 p/year all the way up to $19.95!

After they got enough complaints, they reduced the rate back to $14.95, but it's still TWICE what it was less than a year ago.

Even NameCheap.com jumped their rate from $7.98 p/year up to $9.98.

Are registrars allowed to charge whatever they want, with rate increases at any time?

10 years ago NetworkSolutions.com was $35 p/year.

They must have dropped their rates a bit at some point, if an increase is just bringing them back to where they were.

just had this crazy idea: google gets their own tld .GO and offers anyone second level domain space for free. i think it would make a dent in other registrars revenues.

It was like $75/year back in 97 to 2000. Not sure if it was lowered at any point after that, but I switched as soon as I found a place that had their prices at $35/year. At this point I will stick with the much cheaper.

The registry, Verisign, did a price increase not too long ago. That's why namecheap increased. Namecheap has also recently LOWERED prices on a lot of domains.

Are you sure? From my recollection, they were $35 a year, but you had to purchase two years.
