I think that there may be a key logger program or some kind of spy ware on my PC.
How do I check for this and what do I look for?

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is good to have I think also. I keep it updated often and run it often.

You need to run a scan.. for more super hidden viruses you'll need to dig deep like with Neuber.com's Security Task Manager.. shows all programs active and gives it a threat rating.. I found a virus I installed intentionally that goes invisible as super super hidden admin permissions. Nothing else would deactivate it. Once i knew the virus name from MSE scan, I removed it then repaired edited registry info. This program comes with an anti-keylogging feature that stays active when you turn your PC on.

This wont find some of the new viruses but a good free scanner is Microsoft Security Essentials

There are hardware and software keyloggers.

Do you have some reason to suspect as keylogger?

Compromised passwords etc?

Anyway, check your keyboard and its connecting cable or wireless connections for anything strange. Then check with software to detect a rootkit or keylogger. Rootkits are installed at kernel level usually and they are difficult to detect. Online or virus scanners won't detect them if they are real rootkits at kernel level.

A reformat is a sure way to get rid of a kernel level rootkit or software keyloger.

hard to know, first run scanes, not just 1 av, use more of them, then use special tools like malwarebytes, spybot and similar stuff, use Comodo FW that have super built in protection, and last find some super special tools, because evertything today is not 100%
