Verisign announced that as of Jan. 15, 2012, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $7.34 to $7.85 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase from $4.65 to $5.11.

Registrars will be raising the prices at least another .51 per year per domain name. If you have a large portfolio, plan now and renew your names for multiple years even this time, and save a little extra cash.

Even a small-to-medium portfolio of 1,000 names? That's a minimum savings of $510 per renewal year.

If you gave 1000 domains at say $8/domain thats $8k
With $8k you can turn a bigger profit than the $500 you'd save by prepaying for one year. Let alone more than one year.
I wouldnt waste say $80k to save $5k in a 10 years period, oh well.

If you have 1000 good domains that you know you'll keep anyway, you're saving over $1k by renewing them for just 2 years.

Your example was for 10 years. Obviously that's quite a different story than domains coming up for renewal in 2012 that you're going to have to pay for no matter how you slice it.

That's an initial outlay of ~ $17k to save $1k, which isn't completely accurate because you need to renew the current year anyway. So you're looking at a ~ 7% ROI.

I would only do it if I had spare cash and really couldn't think of anything else for write-offs. The 7% really wouldn't be worth it to me when there are other items that need to be handled.

In 2006, ICANN and VeriSign settled a legal dispute, resulting in VeriSign being generously awarded management of the .com contract, for another 6 years until 2012. Terms of that renewal agreement stipulated that VeriSign could only implement 4 price increases over 6 years. This planned price increase would be 5 consecutive years. Where the fuck is ICANN to enforce the terms of this agreement?

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers? (ICANN) board of directors Tuesday approved a settlement to end a dispute with VeriSign Inc. over the latter?s ability to introduce new services.

Under the settlement, ICANN allows VeriSign to renew its contract for management of the .com registry in 2012, with US$6 from each domain registered going to ICANN. During the six years in between, VeriSign may raise domain registration fees by a maximum of seven percent in four of those six years.

The US Depepartment of Commerce needs to step in and they should put an end to ICANN's mismanagement of the domain name system once and for all. To ensure the best interests of the public, VeriSign should be forced to enter competitive bids for future renewal of the .com and .net contracts. Those greedy fucktards at ICANN just renewed VeriSign's .net contract.

Here's the exact Terms of the .com registry renewal agreement from ICANN.org dated March 1, 2006.

Section 7.3 Pricing for Domain Name Registrations and Registry Services.

(d) Maximum Price. The Maximum Price for Registry Services subject to this Paragraph 7.3 shall be as follows:

(i) from the Effective Date through 31 December 2006, US$6.00;

(ii) for each calendar year beginning with 1 January 2007, the smaller of the preceding year's Maximum Price or the highest price charged during the preceding year, multiplied by 1.07; provided, however, that such increases shall only be permitted in four years of any six year term of the Agreement. In any year, however, where a price increase does not occur, Registry Operator shall be entitled to increase the Maximum Price by an amount sufficient to cover any additional incremental costs incurred during the term of the Agreement due to the imposition of any new Consensus Policy or documented extraordinary expense resulting from an attack or threat of attack on the Security or Stability of the DNS, not to exceed the smaller of the preceding year's Maximum Price or the highest price charged during the preceding year, multiplied by 1.07.

This would actually be VeriSign's 6th consecutive annual price increase, not 5th as previously posted.
