Obama administration will monitor social networks

http://www.fb-news.co.uk/white-house-need-to-monitor-facebook-extremism/
A White House terrorism strategy released today says Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks aid in ?advancing violent extremist narratives? and should be monitored by the government.

The 12-page strategy (PDF), which outlines ways to respond to violent extremism, promises that: ?We will continue to closely monitor the important role the Internet and social-networking sites play in advancing violent extremist narratives.?

President Obama said in a statement accompanying the report that the federal government will start ?helping communities to better understand and protect themselves against violent extremist propaganda, especially online.?

You would all be screaming if this was Bush. Is it ok if it's Obama? Remember that every expansion of the activities of the government stay in place no matter what party takes office. Look at wiretapping, gwantanimo, etc

Would not suprise me...

I kinda laugh at people, who complain that GMAIL is 'reading' their stuff, and giving them targeted ads...

But... Well... So what? Who cares? AdBlockers are FREELY available...

However, actual monitoring IS OUT OF ORDER...

Thats the reason I REFUSE to have a FB account...

I have had outrage over the government monitoring those things for the last 10 years. BIG TIME!! Being in payment processing I jhave had to deal with this bullshit on an endless basis. OFAC, SAR's IMT reports, etc, etc, etc... It's been scary for the last decade

I do not believe "it's ok" regardless of which puppet sits at the head of the table.

This country was founded on 'free speech' and that right should be absolute. I do not condone the Klan, anti abortion activities, skinhead/nazi's, homo fearing, arab propaganda and the rest. However, I do believe all of them should have the 'right' to voice their grievances, and demonstrate if they like within reason.

Oppression of free speech is a slippery slope, and other bigots, idiots, closed minded or fearful people's intolerance for others can lead down a road I have no interest in seeing our country go down.

Sadly, many are too apathetic to care or stop it. Society today does not seem to get infuriated enough unless it effects their cell phone, internet connection, or favorite website. I guess they will not 'wake up' or care about these types of things until the police and military are goose stepping down Michigan Avenue.

silly fellas...

the govt has been monitoring all communications, including the internet, for many years..

all the data is sucked in and analyzed..

start sending emails about your plot to kill the president and start talking about it over your cell phone and see how long it is before you get a knock on your door...

Facebook is public. People need to realize that.

I would not expect a welcome greeting from the police department if I sat on the courthouse steps preaching the glory of bombing the Pentagon.

Not everyone believes that the government can protect you from all earthly threats to your existence. I doubt that the most serious terrorists are going to be on some social network discussing their blue prints and grand schemes to bring down the infidels. At least those simply open to the public.

i understand that. nevertheless, my point is valid. many government entities are set-up to monitor situations, police are a great example. of course i don't think the police can protect me from all earthly threats to my existence, but the fact is they monitor and protect.

just like the UN. in another thread, op wonders why the UN is not on-top (monitoring) a situation in the middle east but the u.s. monitoring a website where people have been known to reveal their intentions is off-limits.

you have got to be kidding me?? there isn't enough government operatives in the world that could cover what it would take to monitor every conversation in the US alone, not to mention people in other countries... could you imagine listening in on 99% of everyday peoples bullshit? they would hang themselves in a week!

If you discuss your criminal or terrorist plots on your Facebook page you are an idiot. Wait, most terrorists are idiots ...

Who cares ...

There is no 4th amendment expectation of privacy in published works ? this would include published internet pages.

red herring issue

Thanks for the links Barefootsies, very interesting

A guy I know is now divorced because of what he found out about his wife after a friend (who works as a Police Officer) demonstrated the power of their Master Facebook Password. They logged into his wife's account, this account also gives one access to Undelete Deleted messages. Turns out this guy's wife was having an affair

A White House terrorism strategy released today says Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks aid in “advancing violent extremist narratives” and should be monitored by the government.

The 12-page strategy (PDF), which outlines ways to respond to violent extremism, promises that: “We will continue to closely monitor the important role the Internet and social-networking sites play in advancing violent extremist narratives.”

President Obama said in a statement accompanying the report that the federal government will start “helping communities to better understand and protect themselves against violent extremist propaganda, especially online.”

You would all be screaming if this was Bush. Is it ok if it's Obama? Remember that every expansion of the activities of the government stay in place no matter what party takes office. Look at wiretapping, gwantanimo, etc
Social Networks are published right on the web, for most if not all to see ... public!

Quite a difference with illegal wire tapping, email interception, ....

This is simply legal, no need for warrants ....

If Obama would not do that, you ' libertarians ' ( ) would be fuming ... with reason as it could allow another 9/11 just like Bush allowed by ignoring daily briefings !!!!

You want to bash Obama ? There is much more you could use then this weal spin ...

kinda twisting it a lot there, and making it a Bush vs Obama thing? That boat came and went.

Our government has always monitored communications of all types, that's what they do, it's their job to protect us. We know that we aren't completely free in America, gonna blame that on Obama too?

That thing is that even if they can monitor it, the government has no interest in what 99.9% of us are doing.

I would be more worried if FB screwed up and let some of my friends see the posts that were hidden from them.

this is all so the government can say they did something when the next attack happens. theres so much monday morning QB from the liberal media. Liberals act like 911 would have been prevented if georgie took his august 6 terror report more seriously.

What if they put a camera in every living room to monitor everyone. You've got nothing to hide. Would you just accept it? I hope you get the point...
