Can anyone explain Tumblr to me?

I seem to have missed this bandwagon.

From what I understand it is sort of a blogging platform with followers and whatnot? Kind of like a livejournal on steroids? I checked out a few random Tumblrs and most of them were posts featuring nothing but GIFs and emails your grandmother would forward to you.

And yes I've read their about page: http://www.tumblr.com/about

I guess what I'm asking for is some examples of some of the more popular Tumblr's out there. Show me who's doing what with it...

Thanks

You've got tumblr figured out. I guess you're asking how to make tumblr work for you?

Watermarked images, but not too watermarked because tumblrs don't seem to like that. If it's sex related, you want to post a bunch of sex shit and get other sex related tumblrs to follow and reblog you. Once they reblog you, your original blog will show up in the dashboard of all the rebloggers followers.

Make sense?

Edit: the best way to get followers is to follow and reblog the posts of others...many will follow back.

Exactly, thank you. The reason I'm asking is that that I was doing some keyword researching and I noticed Tumblr stuff was ranking very well for a ton of different things.

So, from what you're saying, it's the Twitter of the blogging world in a sense? Pretty cool... I'll have to mess around with it now.

It is like Twitter in a lot of ways, just more image based instead of text based. It's all about getting reblogged by people with a lot of followers.

Ahh, that explains the reason I was seeing so many .gif related posts and whatnot. I think I get it now. Seems like it would be a good place for affiliates to get porn traffic in that case...

The problem I've had is they really seem to hate watermarks for some reason.

I see so many photos I can identify -- from studios that always watermark -- that have them cropped out. No links, either.

Maybe somebody doing it right on tumblr can weigh in?

Tumblr is awesome and many of our models are on it generating nice sales hehe. Even better if you tie it into your twitter as well. It's all about building up your followers and reblogging as much as you blog.

I enjoy the mobile app as well and there are some cool wordpress plugins you can incorporate too.

I keep getting notices that people are following me and other such crap, but I never created an account. Is it possible someone added a post from one of my blogs and got me in the system, or is this just phishing?

Don't view tumblr as a twitter but use it like you would a normal blog.

You can connect a .com to your tumblr and edit the sidebar html to suit your needs.

Make sure to tag your pics and also make sure to add a relevant text below as this goes to the url ending

I have many tumblr accounts and once you have some followers it is easy to grow new ones without much hassle by reblogging your other blogs.

You will soon find communities or relevant interest groups once people start reblogging you.

I have some tumblrs in top google spots with maybe 60k or so followers for all accounts. I follow no one. That is a waste of time and will mess up your dashboard.

The majority of my visitors come from google and facebook, the internal tumblr traffic is just an added bonus.

See http://www.tumblr.com/explore for some inspiration.

My tumblrs are mainstream, their policy on adult is not that clear and rather random.

Feel free to hit me up if you'd like a few more pointers.

Exactly! Find the right blend of personal and publicity and make sure to friend the big players in the adult sector of Tumblr and you've got it made.
