Flash floods hit New York

Tropical Storm Irene which hit the US east coast has caused flash flooding in upper New York state and Vermont.

Surging water levels have left a trail of devastation in places like Margaretville and the Catskills, destroying bridges and damaging properties.

Ok so I lived in FL for years.. Hell when the 3 Hurricanes hit Daytona several years back I never even left my place on beach side. 3 Hurricanes that year and I lost my power for a day and a half from them all and never lost my cable.

I move up here to Mass and barely get 40 MPH gusts and it blows over a big ass tree across the street from my place and kills my cable til this morning.

I mean seriously there was barely any wind and the storm wasn't even here yet when the tree fell over.. It's like wtf is up with the sissy trees up here..

It was kind of surprising to see all the flooding and trees down considering how wimpy the hurricane was. It was barely breezy. We get 60 mph winds in thunderstorms for christssake.

The "sissy trees" were sitting in super saturated soil from record rain falls a few weeks before hand...

I wouldn't call it record rainfall. We had a lil rain here but nothing out of ordinary.

im certain there's a lesson to be learned about bending so as not to break here or something.

So what you're saying is that your sissy dirt got wet which made all the sissy trees in your sissy state to fall over?

I see.

Best guess is I'd say the landscape here in fl is made to withstand winds because hurricanes are a usual thing and a factor in the business, and up north they don't think about it happening?

The destructions caused by the flood are unfortunate. People must escape events such as tornados, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanos, etc. Evacuations could be possible although some people move very slowly on ground.

We didn't get anything but 15-20 miles east where some friends live - they're still waiting for power to come back on. One friend just posted on Facebook that they hear it could be up to two weeks. Pretty awesome for a small ass storm.

Yea maybe.. I'm just a bit amazed TBH how easy some of the trees went over up here. I mean really in FL if it wasn't a cat 3 it was pretty much biz as usual and cat 3 was still a stay at home unless it was something out of the ordinary. Hell I remember as a kid riding out Hurricane David which made land fall 30 miles south from us so I've been through some storms.

I would think up here with North Easters that the land scape would be at least somewhat used to winds. I mean when I say we didn't get much here I really mean it is was very light gusts, I'd bet 40mph max and that was very few and far between.
