Bee hive removal (pic)

Okay,

So I'm pretty sure I've got a situation like this going on in my backyard (see below). I've left the bees alone for around 5 months now and at this point there are so many I've got to do something.

Rather than call an exterminator, I thought I'd pick the minds of my fellow GFY members... how would you handle this?

My access box is closed, so I'd have to get in there and get something to lift it up. With all of the bees going nuts in the daytime, I figured at night would be the best time to get close enough to spray them down before prying the box open... the question is, with what? I've tried raid, doesn't do shit.

Call an exterminator. Why waste time on that shit? It's like the guys with brick and mortar businesses that want a website, and go ask everyone and his brother how to make one.

Well I would say gasoline and a light, but in your case, I'd either pour diesel fuel or high octane gas on the hive.

Best Option: Call an exterminator. You wouldn't even be charged. In fact, you may make a few dollars. They collect the bees with a vacuum like device and send them to labs that pay big money for honey bees. It's an amazing business all its own.

Second Best Option: Lots of smoke! Bees are disoriented by smoke. If you fan large amounts of smoke into the hive, the bees will temporarily be confused, leaving you enough time to dismantle the hive. Although, they may rebuild and you're back to square 1.

Don't kill them... Bees are one of the most important insects, if not the most important, we have... and we're truly running out of them, very very very quickly.

I'm not bullshitting either, you can look it up...don't kill them, hire an exterminator that will remove them, but not kill them.

Look for a beekeeper in your neck of the woods and see if they will come and take them away
You probably could ask animal control if they know of any beekeepers in your area

Depending on where you live you may be able to find a service that will just relocate them rather than kill them.

DON'T KILL THEM!!!
Call animal control or the fire department and they'll relocate them to a safe location. Whatever you do, don't be cruel to them. Bees are kind little animals that don't hurt people unless they're attacked.

Call a beekeeper. He will come out and remove the entire hive without killing the bees...usually they relocate them.

Good luck, and by no means should you mess with these guys, they are vicious....

there's all kinds of bee spray that will kill them easily. I use this stuff that foams. It has a straw that sticks into the end of the can and it can shoot a jet of foam about 9 feet. Never seen a bee survive this stuff.

Yes Bees are dying off. We need to find a way to save them.

Boycotting Genetically modified food is not the answer. GMO Food can be resistant to pests thereby yielding a bigger crop so less people have to starve. It also keeps the price of food down so parents can more easily afford healthy vegetables for their children instead of eating out at much cheaper McDonalds.

GMO also makes it easier for local famers to produce more food without having to use as much pesticide, and food from Local farms means less transportation costs and less CO2 in the atmosphere.

Is it perfect? No. Is it dangerous? Possibly, but thats what research is for. I'm sick of all of these anti-progress / anti-science nitwits who scare themselves into blindness and then try to do the same to others. They need to read some fucking books and then shut the fuck up.

Yeah I know some people who had a bee problem, and yes if you find a beekeeper they will come get them for free. And they might even give you some of the honey. It's like free money to them, little honey makers.

In the words of Henry Kissinger: "Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the people."

Some points:-

- The "bigger crop" bit is a nice concept used for marketing but unfortunately doesn't translate to reality.

- As soon as you get GMO crop in your field, whether you wanted it or not, you've got to pay a % of your profit to Monsanto.

- The crops has been shown to absorb some of the pesiticide, this means we're consuming it.

- Seedless crops have been designed, this means you have to keep buying the seeds from Monsanto. If GMO crops ever take over the world, one could starve entire nations by refusing to sell them seeds.

Overall it's about profiting from and controlling the food supply

You say 'a situation like this' - but you don't say wether or not you are certain that you have a honeybee hive.

First you should make sure what type of insect you are dealing with. Yellow jackets (a species of hornet) look much like honeybees, and tend to live in the ground. However, they make paper nests (you are not likely to be able to see the paper nest) and they make no honey.

Yellow jackets can be more agressive then honeybees, can be slightly more difficult to remove, but there is no reason not to kill them, in fact it's advisable, and not terribly difficult.

Both insects sleep at night, so the common approach is to find access to the nest at dusk, then to spray a canful of the streamming kind of hhornet spray down into the opening.

If thats an actual picture of what you have - leave the access box open, the bees won't like being uncovered, in a short while they will be likely to swarm and move.

I had a large wild honeybee hive in a toolbox once - I opened the toolbox, they were gone in a week.
