Photographers - How is the lighting done in these pics?
I like the style of this photography. How is the lighting done, or are they photoshopped and put on a different background?
In the burgundy one she looks 3 dimensional. How are the lights placed for that one? And in the black one you cannot see the background at all yet the models are well lit. Are they cut out and put on a black background or is that lighting and how is it done so there is no reflection etc on the background? Is it possible to duplicate these with an entry level camera and two lights? I have zero experience but need to duplicate that style. Any links to examples of how it is done would be appreciated too! I just like this style where all you see is the model and no background and the ones with the background look 3 dimensional. Thanks! ![]() BURGUNDY PICTURE BLACK PICTURE |

The second, is again with a low light maybe 70 watt dropping from the right but slightly higher, giving no shadows, maybe more so from above, with a black cover on the floor, you can see the cover slightly over the girl at the rear, (literally lol), covering her knee. |

Just like arsewithclass (I believe the other Gary) pointed out the lighting is simple and minimum. I just wanted to point out that sometimes it is the art and creativity of the photographer and not the cost of his equipment.
You have to have vision and see the end result even before you shoot it. The best photographers on GFY (I'm sure Paul Markham will disagree) like Naughty Rob and Dean Capture could easily do this with 1 camera and a couple strobes. Strive to expand your knowledge and creativity first and if you do this the money will follow to buy more equipment. |

[QUOTE=ArsewithClass;18420411]The first photo, the low light is from the side, with a burgundy back drop with no flash.
QUOTE] As there is a shadow on the floor, one light, a shadow on the background, light two, and a highlight on her arm light three. Pretty awful picture really. |

2 lights, as shown.
![]() It's not the lights that are the most important thing. It's how you control them. Small soft boxes might do it, better would be hoods with a scrim over them. The one on the right might of been further up to the girls left, just a quick illustration. The most vital element is the lack of bounce. so surrounding the whole thing there needs to be something to adsorb light, including the ceiling. Otherwise the light bounces around and the effect of the shadows are lost. If you notice there's more light at the girls feet than her head, so the 2 sources of light will be around 4-5 feet off the ground. Who ever shot this might of done 20 or more test shots to get it right, in the old days they would of been on Polaroid and driven us to despair getting it right. |

the black one can be achieved by feathering the light. It could be done with one flash attached to a softbox.

no, the shadow on the right hand side is the edge of the soft box....
There is no shadow from the model on the right & therefore no light from the left handside... Only 2 lights here has been used, from the right & as tony says, definatly a soft boxes considering the shadow on the right. One from high and one from low... origionally I thought only the one light, but looking at those 2 areas of light, thats one high and one low both in dim or 70 watt bulbs |

she has a rim light on her right arm and shoulder, that light must come from either behind her. i am guessing a barndoor with a honey comb and a large softbox right in front of her (notice she is turned to the left).
a lot of photography is experience, best photogs make a sketch of each set and take notes so that next time they want to create something similar, they dont have to have it all in their heads, plus often you note down f-stops/differential between the lights. to say its simple and anyone can do this photo is just nonsense.

thx for the english lesson, now go & spellcheck your blog, there are lots of mistakes on there. That would be more intelligent than bumping threads just to troll & have a poke at me, considering, as you said, you know nothing about. ![]() |

2 lights... One soft light from top right casting the shadow and making her upper leg lighter than anything else. One from behind with a flash for the rim job... Something was placed to the photographers left to catch and cast some light to reduce shadows.
