.XXX - So I'm curious about something...

Why hasn't anyone stepped up and started the process of applying for other extensions?

The way I see it, if they approved .XXX then they'd have no grounds for denying other sTLD's like say, .sex or .porn

IMHO, if the adult community actually got together and sponsored our own sTLD, then a LOT of the weight and pressure of the .XXX scams would disappear.

Now, obviously the larger programs would have to step up, but I see a lot of people, both large and small, publicly voicing their dislike, and even hatred, of .XXX. So why not, instead of harping on the after affects of ICANN being paid off, why not do something about it?

And just in case it is unclear our position... we are strongly opposed to .XXX and will NOT be buying a single domain under that scam of a sTLD.

Didn't you hear there has already been an application made to ICANN for ".manwin"

Pretty sure they just said they were going to offer it in the near future and it may not be to the point yet where they are accepting applications. When they do, I am sure you will see at least .sex and likely .porn maybe .cams and very likely .gay (<- best investment imo)

Yes, they are worthless... but considering how far .XXX has really gotten thus far, do you not think that if they are allowed to remain a monopoly (so to speak) for the "adult" sTLD, then eventually one day there will indeed be attempts to push .XXX into legislation?

As for us, we won't be buying a single .xxx domain, thanks for reading that in my OP ;)

They are not worthless to an investor. Who ever invests into a tld like .sex etc will make profit. While some people might think they are worthless they will sell enough to more than make back their investment plus a lot of profit. Simply because their investment will be 100x less than what ICM spent over the last 10 years. Even if they were to sell just 20,000 domains at $10 each, per year, they would make really good money. If someone comes in with a good adult tld like .sex and undercuts ICM by making it a lot cheaper they will take all of his business. .sex is better than .xxx anyway.

Well, I think the term worthless was being used as an in comparison to a TLD like .com or .net.

But yes, I wholly agree with you on the points you made.. which is why I'm curious as to why no one has started the process of .sex or .porn or w/e. At the end of the day, they may never compete with .com but they'd still reduce, remove even, a lot of the bullshit surrounding .xxx

Joan Irvine might be lobbying as as we speak.

If the day comes that all porn has to go on .xxx despite what ICANN said when they approved .xxx it is no big deal.

Simply migrate all the explicit content on your .com sites to a worthless .xxx like gy8gdf.xxx and use the existing sites for promotion.

This allows none of your brand juice to slip into the hands of .xxx/ICM and is business as usual.

Fuck .xxx

Far from worthless.

Fact is that regardless of the "collective view", every prime and kind of prime .xxx will have a long list of people bidding for it, and many will change hands for a profit many times over.

You realize ICM first applied for .xxx in 2000? It was shot down before numerous times and even this time, it still took quite a while before it finally got approved (nearly 3 years): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.xxx.

Applying for extensions isn't a walk in the park, even with the new TLD program.

Yes, I know the full history of .xxx

But one thing you are not taking into account here is that .xxx is now approved. There would be no justification for denying any other sTLD under the adult "label' now that .XXX is approved... unless of course you count the monetary justification (ICM people paying off ICANN more to "protect" .xxx).. but a scandal of those proportions would easily blow up IMHO.

That's a good point that it took over a decade.
Board after board denied it. I personally filed comments ago. By trying over and over, they finally got one board to approve it. Some would say that because we already have .edu, there is no need for .school, and because we now have .xxx there is no purpose served by .adult or .sex. In that way, having .xxx may make it more difficult to get another adult tld. "Why would we need .isp when we already have .net?" some would argue.

I can understand this logic.. but then, if the entire adult community actually got behind a .sex or .porn or w/e then there's plenty of justification for approving the sTLD.

ICM claims that it's sponsored by the adult community, but we know that is false, so if we got together as an actual community and got behind a .sex or .porn then I can't really see it being denied.

Wouldn't work for the fact that ICM can make up any rules they want and if they didn't want you to own the .com anymore then can enforce that, and they likely would. They would tell you, stop using the .com or forfeit your .xxx If they make a deal with the govt to make us use .xxx they make the rules and control the entire game.

Also, ICM still wins, because then there would be millions of .xxx domains purchased and Stuart will get the pay off he is looking for and I really really hope that fat piece of shit never gets that pay off.

One thing is for sure, Joan started lobbying for it the second she was hired. These people are all snakes and their only priority is how much money they can make, they will lie to you and tell you whatever you want to hear while they try to accomplish their goal.

I think you missed the announcement from ICANN that they were going to open it up to what ever anyone wanted, including more adult. But they made it sound like, if i remember right, that it was still a little ways away (maybe year or so) before they would start doing it. I would have to think a few big companies are jockeying to get in line already but it could be a little while before you hear who and/or when it gets approved.

Your question was "Why hasn't anyone stepped up and started the process of applying for other extensions?". Perhaps you don't know the new TLD program looming, with applications being accepted in early 2012. Would it be wise to start an application in the "old" process and take nearly 3 years to get approved, or start it during the new program when it'll take only 1 year to get approved and have a much higher chance of being approved?

That's why no one has "stepped up" - they're waiting until next year if there even will be any.

just like .pro and .mobi. Domainers buy tons of domains, sell them to each other and a couple of years later they're dropping those domains because there's no end-users interested in them.
