So the adult meets mainstream in content theft

This is a bitch thread. I see nothing coming out of this except to vent.

I developed a mainstream search function 3 years ago and is now making me good money. I did not copyright, patent or anything.

Now HUGE companies have both stolen my database results (site provided search results for a specific crowd) and copied the manner in which I originally did the programming.

I'm talking about companies with financial statements in the billions.

So basically, my current source of income will soon end... very similar to how tubes work these days I suppose.

I reached out to some attorneys and basically the mentality is... it will cost 100's of thousands of dollars in attorney fees to pay for suing a large company like that.

Some of you may remember me talking about how I trippled a sites profit. Well... I did more then that... I made it 6 times profit since handed to me in a settlement. So the site is making me over 100K per year and now I think it will evaporate.

So, any gfy lawyers on call to give me some good news? Something like... since you were the first to think of... and develop this idea... you have the rights to it. That would be nice. Oh... so how do I collect those rights?

I think I need a better understanding (not a lawyer btw)

Did they rip scrape search results?

Did they have server side access in order to copy "the manner in which you originally did the programming"? Or are they displaying results in a similar manner - leading you to assume that they are using something similar.

Don't see how they can outright copy your manner of programming without server side access. Unless this thing runs on Javascript or something.

It was just a popular search function and the programming wasn't all that difficult. One company wrote a crawler and extracted a bunch of results and another company replicated the programming that we did originally and now offers for free.

Both companies offer this service now for free and sure enough... put that extra little something to make sure that it is for FREE.

All cocksuckers...

Big companies lie cheat and steal all the time. Why do you think their "customer service" can never "do anything"?

Maybe you can find a hungry new lawyer......?

One way to fuck them

Most companies that provide information, have a few fake items, salted into their database. Mapping web sites always have fake towns or roads. So when another company steals your information, you can prove in court they stole your information, because they copied the fake stuff. Under current US copyright law, you don't need to have filed for copyright. Just that you published it, give you copyright. See a lawyer who specializes in copyright, not some big-ass law firm who knows nothing, but charges big fees. Remember, a copyright is like a patent. It's just a license to sue. Doesn't mean you will win, but gives you the ammo to win.

To sue costs a lot of money. Talked with one liar and mentioned up to 1 mil.

I do have an attorney right now who is taking some action but fear all I'm doing is paying him money to get no results. I have 26 accounts created from the company who is displaying my results and another firm's owner who created an account who stole the idea.

I have so much ammunition but not the funds to support a law suit.

I've had 2 issues lately I need attorneys. Issuse 1, I was recommend a crap attorney. Finally found a good guy who is fighting for me at a resonable price. Not as much fight as I want, but the fight I can afford.
Issue 2, was an old case, in a special field. Only a few attorneys in the US handle. Several wanted $ just to even discuss the case with me. One I did talk to said the case was too old. A few years ago, I did talk to an attorney who would have taken the case and fought for me, but she left her law firm and moved out of town. I wasn't needing her at the time, as it was a medical issue. Just needed her when it was time.

The is a law firm in Kansas City, that is supposed to be the biggest patent attorneys in the US. Read an article about them years ago. Not sure of their name. But I know someome who works there.

Content theft, in mainstream, is about 10 times worse than in adult... naturally.

I agree. If he can prove that he wrote it, he needs to find a good, affordable lawyer and try to work on NCNP bases or split revenues.

Sorry but you can't patent an idea. If they scraped your actual results you might have some recourse, but simply reproducing your functionality on their own is going to leave you SOL.

You can't copyright an idea. A patent DOES protect ideas as long as they're applied in a process of some sort, which this would be.

I don't understand the million+ costs quotes, surely it's the lawyer's salary? So okay, maybe you have to pay this guy's salary for how long this lasts, get a lawyer that doesn't earn a million a year

Yeah, the way many large companies do business now is pretty sickening.
