What's the best video editing program?

Whats the best video editing program out there which can cut, fade, add music etc etc

I'm using Power Director right now, but its so freaking slow when working on big videos and it keeps having VSYNC issues with my 1080i vids

While lots of folks, including myself were not all that happy with the update, the new Final Cut Pro X is really nice for people who've used iMovie in the past and want something a bit more robust. It's grown on me.

I've always liked Vegas -- now owned by Sony. Vegas PRO is powerful. I just downloaded Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum demo to try out. Probably less complicated, but powerful.

I have always liked how Sony Vegas offers free 30-day no hassle, full featured demos.

I still prefer Adobe Premiere. However, I also use Sorenson Squeeze and VideoCharge.

Which one I use depends on what I am doing. Premiere for first release, and the others when I have to deal with cranking out multiple videos (like a week's worth of updates on clips stores). But that is just my preference.

Final Cut Pro is the best but imovie is easier to use for very simple things.

MPEG Streamclip is good for rendering.

Happy Final Cut Pro user here, although I have not installed the latest version yet.

I used to use Adobe Premiere until they went through a phase where they weren't supporting the Mac platform, but I'm happy to report that they were not terribly different to learn or use. I have stayed with Apple, and have been very pleased with the entire Final Cut Studio ever since (although I am still a major Adobe user/supporter/devotee).

I use a combination of things for ease:

ULEAD VIDEOSTUDIO for quick tours
ADOBE PREMIERE for processing and encoding
XILISOFT for renders, url encodes etc.

+1 for editing on Vegas. Very easy to learn. You can do a lot of things on it once you figure it out.

But I use Sorenson Squeeze and Handbrake for rendering.

I use Pinnacle started with windows movie maker, and it was easy to learn, and does everything u need for porn. I've tried avid, vegas and adobe, didn't care for any of those, if your having trouble with rendering or editing, sounds more like you need to upgrade your computer.

Premiere Pro is the best. I still use Final Cut Pro but even in the FCP forums you see nothing but praise for Premiere Pro. It also depends on what cam you use. FCP can't edit native AVCHD (as used by Sony and Panasonic cams) so you need to convert to another format first. Premiere Pro does edit AVCHD natively. I already have Creative Suite 5 here that includes Premiere, I only need to get a new computer because Premiere requires 64 bit OS and hardware.

Don't forget about Linux... used by more studios than win/mac combined, can run all the software of both win/mac and has at least five free video editors that dominate the paid ones.

Oh yeah, I use Vegas Pro for most projects, the Win one for simple home shit, and GoldWave for sound.

I just love Vegas -- but I'm not a pro editor. I just dabble.

If I was serious about editing I'd probably use Final Cut.

I have heard this more than once, but have NEVER spoken to anyone who can back this up.

I have heard of animation studios making use of Linux for rendering and what not, but never of anyone claiming Cinelerra or any other linux based video editors being better than FCP, Premiere or Avid.

the guys I know with Linux spend a lot of time fucking around with it, trying to find stuff that works, tweaking stuff etc... don't have the time for the inclination or that myself... like using gimp for photo editing... yeah it's great blah blah blah... not interested in a command line photo editing software

Over the last several years I've read several articles on studios moving to Linux, I think it's for the base OS, rather than using the free software provided for editing videos.

However, what it comes with, from personal experience of using it, is rather powerful - but I'm no studio editor. I would say on par with Wax, but not so limited on the time-line, but like Wax they can load the plugins of the other video editors, making them them each work similar and often exactly the same, as the top editors.

I've READ that as well, probably the same articles. I've just never met anyone, heard anyone or seen anyone actually use linux and linux based software for high end video editing. Not saying that there aren't people who do, just that I'm working in the industry and have never yet to come across anyone putting it to use.

All four of the features I've worked on this past year have been or are being edited using Apple hardware and software. This one below is one that you might actually see.

I think the difference might be scalability for rendering time... not exactly what can be created with the software.

We use win/mac because we work on, one movie at a time.

DreamWorks for example only uses Linux. They work on 10 or more movies at a time, each using 10's of millions of CPU hours, per movie! Scaling up to crunch faster as the hardware technology improves, allowing them to produce the movies faster. They also do things we simply don't do, or not much of it at least... like blue screens, CGI, stunts, and other crazy stuff, that really needs major editing and rendering.

We're just the pups of the video editing industry... however I bet a couple of the VoD companies or maybe few of the really large porn companies, do have something that scales related to video processing.. no idea if it's linux though.

Yep, try editing AVCHD 1080x60p on FCP etc...... Can't do it.
Premiere is making a run at the title on MAC and on PC it OWNS.

You can download trial versions of most programs like Sony Vegas and Premiere so that might be the best place to start.

I use Premiere CS5 myself and love it. As someone else mentioned, it handles HD video in real time. Most other programs have to render HD out. But you still need a powerful PC with a good video card to handle HD even with Premiere.
