1and1.com - $1/yr .com domains. Anyone similar?

I use 1and1.com to register domains just to forward to a main site. They only charge $1/year for dot coms which includes forwarding.

Is anyone similar in price? I want to mix it up and try other registrar/hosts. The domains I am registering are throwaway domains that I won't bother renewing so $1/yr is pretty sweet.

TIA!

1and1 seriously sucks.

Godaddy has $1 domain coupons sometimes. Other than that a good price is around $8-10, sometimes less with sales/coupons.

Emil,

It looks like it is unlimited. I keep registering them and they are all $1.

After a year I think that the domain goes to regular price, and privacy is still included but I am not sure.

A couple things I have noticed is that domain registration is not instant. It takes hours, sometimes days for it to go through so I am not registering anything I care about with them. I read that they register their domain registrations are put into a pool and they register them in batches every few days. Which is bullshit but cheap still, lol.

And, when you register $1 domains there is an option in the control panel to "auto-renew" the domain when it expires and this option is greyed out and cannot be disabled. So unless you are on top of things your domains are being auto-renewed automagically.

They do listen if you don't want it renewed but I will cross that bridge next year when they all start expiring.

But for strictly forwarding domains, it works great.

Thank you! I think I'll pick up a onetime-CC if I decide to register.

i'd stay away from 1&1. they can be a bigger nightmare than godaddy. they make it as difficult as possible to transfer domains out of them. they'll try to keep domains registered through their promos....

be careful! read their terms!

Why is Godaddy a nightmare?

I've been with them 10+ years and own thousands of domains with them. No problems whatsoever.

Thanks for the heads up.

Any domain I care about I am not registering with 1and1. I am only registering domains for the one year and not renewing them.

In hindsight I should have used a prepaid creditcard but I am not too worried about it. If they auto-renew and don't refund me I will just charge it back.

just be careful, I heard some horror stories of how hard it is to cancel or transfer. If you sell unlimited for 1$ you got to earn somehow.

I had bought 2 domains from 1&1 to test out their service because of their seemingly low prices. Did not have them on auto-renew and when the year reg was up was just going to let them expire like with any other registrar. Only 1&1 sent me a collection notice in the mail to attack my credit score as if I hadn't paid a bill and demanded all these extra fees on top of the registration fee. Total scam! Got me for both domains, too, so whatever savings they were up front cost me a lot more later.
