Adobe ditches Flash for mobile devices

In what you might call a backend bombshell, Adobe this week revealed plans to ditch Flash for mobile devices, and instead focus on HTML5 and Adobe AIR.

Who cares?

For one, ?those [people] whose job it is to market and sell Android tablets,? writes AllThingsD. ?Flash support has been one of the key advantages that aspiring iPad competitors have used to tout their devices.?

?Adobe will have a PR nightmare on its hands trying to convince its three million Flash developers to scrap projects in Flash and move to HTML5,? notes ReadWriteWeb, citing comments from Carlos Icaza, a former manager and engineer of Flash at Adobe.

Na Adobe is stupid like that.. They also had Shockwave which was 100 times better than Flash in regard to browser games but they all but abandoned it several years ago. They only keep it alive so they can sell copies of Director, but they never do much development on it.

We care -- we have a six-figure investment in Adobe Flash and Adobe Air server products... Recently, we created a Flash mobile version for Android.

Sounds to me like Adobe will release a new server product that will be compliant with HTML 5 for production use
-- my guess is $15K for each server's unlimited connection license -- we have multiple servers ...

It's not abandoned, it has transformed into Adobe Flex which is the industry leader in RIA development at the moment. BTW with Flex 4.5 you can create Desktop applications that will run on Mac, Win and Linux, web applications that will run exactly the same on all known browsers and systems, as well as apps for Android, iOS and Blackberry playbook (or whatever it's called). While with HTML5 you need to adjust your code to every browser, which is why HTML5 is years behind Flash engine.

You are partly right, but Adode bought Macromedia many years ago. Since then it's been Adobe Flash and Adobe Shockwave.

This is crazy, I just went to a seminar on mobile web design and they were talking about how Flash for web app development was going to be huge. They showed some really cool examples running on both IOS and Android. I was even looking at taking some classes on Flash for mobile. Crazy how quick they just turn around and dump it.
