I'm taking my wife to one this weekend. She's never been and is in for a heck of meal...

I've been to one of the Ethiopian places here a couple times.

I love sega wat and kitfo...

She is having a hard time wrapping her head around the idea of eating the "plate" and eating with her fingers...haha

I remember one time naively ordering Yemiser W'et with extra spice....I couldn't breathe for about 10 minutes after eating it...I love spicy food, but this was extremely pungent and wickedly spicy...

Ethiopan food is wonderful. I don't eat it an awful lot and I find there aren't many places that do it well but when it's good it's damn good.

If you want to try something that with rival anything for spice ask a real Indian restaurant (I mean one being run by people from India) try order a Vindaloo "Indian Hot". It'll wake you up in the middle of the night thinking you swallowed a volcano.

It's definitely adventurous eating...
a bunch of stews served in dishes and no utensils...just injera (flat bread) to tear off into pieces and use to scoop up/grab eat the stews...

Ethiopian is probably my favorite cuisine. The spices are unusual, the presentation unusual. It's perfect for a date or taking people you really want to connect with. It's impossible to not interact and socialize while eating out of the same family style platter with your hands.

The beef dish with berbere sauce is my favorite (it has many names - my favorite place calls it "ziggni").

Get some Tej (honey wine) while you're there.

back in college I used to eat at the Blue Nile ethiopian restaurant on Telegraph avenue in Berkeley a few blocks from campus. Great restaurant. You eat with your hands. Not a big deal with me cuz I'm Pinoy.

I believe it's closed now. Sad. Blue Nile had great food.

Yum. Injera is like a spongy sourdough pancake - I get it in a shop locally - fun to use.

Love Ethiopian food and there are plenty of great spots in Seattle.

Yes, once. After we ordered our food we just waited and waited for what seemed like forever until from seemingly out of nowhere a bag of rice just landed on the table with a big thud. Scared the fuck out of me.

My girl dragged me to one, I cracked the same type of joke before we went and she actually got genuinely mad at me, called me immature.

I don't like the shit. They served it on a pizza tray, it was this lime flavored flatbread - that covered the whole tray - with rice, lamb and some other stuff dumped on it. Not my cup of tea.

The place I go to here imports their Injera flour directly from Ethiopia...I was talking with the owner one time and he said using buckwheat flour like a lot of places do isn't quite the same feel/texture/taste.

I agree. When I go to "foreign" restaurants I always ask them if I can have their wonderful special meals on a normal dish with knife and fork. If they make a problem about that, I won't eat there. Since I'm the paying customer I expect them to adapt to me, I really can't be bothered to adapt to far away cultures in my own country especially when I'm hungry. I want to eat without having to think or worry and I don't want to see someone else coming back from the toilet and sticking his fingers in my food

When I first heard of the concept of Ethiopian food restaurants years ago, I thought the idea was grimly hilarious. But that is some seriously delicious food. I love variety in spices and I love eating with my fingers, so that is just a big win in my book.
