I'm assuming you mean the Macbook Pro and not the Macbook.

The Air is very limited in what size hard drive can be put into it. Same goes for RAM. Also the Air lacks FireWire although Thunderbolt to FireWire is possible but I'm not sure if there are any options for that at this time besides the latest Apple monitor's built-in bridge.

The Macbook Pro would be the way I would go.

You will be limited video wise with the AIR.

The Pro is the be all and end all.

And get the 17''. The 15'' and 13'' are missing the ExpressCard port.

Hey Max, go with the MBP 17" - it's perfect for taking out on location for production. I have had mine for about 2 years and it's solid as a rock. I also take it with me when I travel

You cannot run FCP properly on an Air.

It's built for portability not power. If you need power, get the MacBook Pro. It will still feel crap for video compared to a Mac Pro though.

I have the 17" Macbook Pro late 2008 model and it's still going strong. When I'm home I connect it to a 30" screen and use its 17" screen as a secondary monitor.

I would like the newer 17" model since it's faster and can hold more RAM but in no hurry to replace it since it still does everything I need it to do. I've maxed out its RAM and put a bigger, faster hard drive in it.

Also if you do go with a Macbook Pro 15" or 17" you have the option of getting a matte screen whilst the Air only is available with a glossy screen.

Unless you are a gamer or need processing on location a 17" laptop is a pain in the ass to carry around, I'll take portability any day.

The Macbok Air is surprisingly fast even compared to the Pro thanks to the flash drive. Only drawbacks are the size of the hard drive and limited connectivity.

I forgot to add, 2011 Macbook Air Benchmark scores higher than a 2010 17" Macbook Pro. It's plenty powerful.

If you need more than 4GB RAM and a hard drive larger than 256GB get the pro. If not get the Air.

13" MacBook Air with 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB memory, 256GB flash storage & Intel HD Graphics 3000 is $1699.

The Pro is by far the better choice if you are looking fo performance.

I had the air and it died on me after about 8 mo.

IMHO Get the Pro and pick up an ipad for when you need to travel lite.

The most expensive one only has 1.7 ghz and 256gb SSD with no option to upgrade past that. Cost is $1599 currently.

You sure you're not referring to the MBP?

Pro is faster, heavier, more expensive.
Air is slower, lighter, less expensive.

Unless you plan to edit video on the road, by the Macbook Air. It's super light and the batteries last forever.

Don't pay for the extra weight and power if you don't need it.

do it like me: spend $4k on a Macbook Pro, find out that half of the stuff you need doesnt exist on Mac OS, install Windows, then watch the screen of your 2,5 year old Macbook die, let Apple tell you that there is no warranty and they want $1k to replace the screen, take the $1k and buy a Toshiba with the same specs, be happy.

Let me get this straight.
You bought a MBPro for $4k and found out that it would not suit your needs but it took you 2 1/2 yrs to figure that out?

Why did you not know it was not for you within 30 day period where you could return for a full refund?

And what company will replace anything after 2 1/2 yrs that is not under warranty?

amazing how you read exactly the opposite of what i wrote...

i bought the macbook, tried to work with it under MacOS but wasnt satisfied - partly because i work in a windows network environment. but its still good hardware so i simply installed windows (after a couple of months).

and then - after only 2.5 years - the screen died. i had about a dozen of laptops since 1996, this was a first. and it happened to the most expensive one i ever had. and that pisses me off - warranty or not.

and the amusing part is that my new laptop cost as much as a new screen on the Apple

and thats why i would never buy Apple again

PS: i only bought the Apple cause my Mother gave me the money - because she is happy with the iMac she has. Which is fine with me. I am no Apple hater in general, i have been working with Mac OS since i had the Mac emulator for my Atari St - in 1987 or so

MaDalton,

Been using a Macbook for almost 3 years now without a problem. Have 3 iMac's that see my Windows network without a hitch. Have 1 iMac running Parallels w/ Windows 7 and can move files between them easily. I have never found a single thing I couldn't do on my Mac that I could do on a PC. Best of all, They run everything perfectly, and perfectly fast. I fucking love Apple. Sorry to hear about your problems. Better luck next time.

i simply couldnt import 10 years of Outlook and Trillian history - and being in a Windows domain network doesnt help either.

but i am not hating on mac os - like i said - i have probably worked more with mac os than most people here - after working a couple of years in a prepress company.

but being let down by overpriced hardware really got me upset

Glad you went MBP. Air is nice as a supplemental computer, but I wouldn't use one as my main one.

I want a macintosh because they seem the only variety that are not designed cheap to fail fast. Seems to be worth the extra laptops you would have to buy in replacements right there.

Mac Air

Had 2 sips of sweet (sugary) wine in a glass, knocked it over plugging in a new external drive on my new Mac Air. Dried out & track pad still perfect.
Try that with a netbook. Bought one for a special project and it was crap out of the box. Oh I mean crap out of the box, after I uninstalled are the stupid games & trialware that eats up 1/2 of the computer memory brand new. Oh, and then there's Best Buy which even adds more shit & jumps the price. See the posts on The Consumerist on how BB fucks there customers.
Cheaper does not mean a bargain in the long run.
