Shopping Carts? What's the best?

If you wanted to sell stuff using a shopping cart, which is the best one?

Thanks

If you're lazy and just want it to work, go lazy with a hosted solution at Volusion.com. I should get a ref code, I'm always telling people how much I love them :D.

It can be paid or open source, I do need to host it though since I want to be able to customize the php code if I need something hacked in.

there was a thread about one or 2 weeks ago .. most solutions were listed.
I would definitively NOT GO with a "hosted " solution ( cart is on an exterior site to yours ) .

I would agree only do hosted solutuons for things you don't mind replacing when the service provider goes out of business / raises prices / starts to suck / no longer meets your needs.

OScommerce is probably the most popular cart and there are a ton of plugins for it. All of those customizations are probably already done, you just install the plugins you want. It's kind of spaghetti code, though.

Zen Cart might be a reasonable choice too.

Then you have special purpose carts, like outre system for selling content. It's definitely a lot better for that specific tyoe of store than any generic cart system.

oscommerce
bigcommerce

both pretty decent with inventory control, gift certs, coupon codes, etc.

we use bigcommerce for our e-cig site and it's been pretty decent. Using templates can be a pain in the ass, but bigcommerce + an odesk hired gun can make it work well.

I've used Zen Cart before, really liked it. It was easy to use, plus plenty of add-ons available for it. Been a while since I've used it, so it may be different now.

When we did our research project and evaluated a truckload of products, the best we found and are happy with is OpenCart. Completely free and open source and full of all the bells and whistles you would probably need/want like coupons, customer groups, etc. We use this on over 40 of our sites now and it works great. Personally I would recommend the 1.4 version, but the newer 1.5 version even supports affiliates. Their forums are not the greatest if you have questions or support, but the product is pretty awesome and for the most part self-explanatory. You can see one of our live versions at http://adulttradingcards.com/shop
Good luck

I like OpenCart. It's free, easy to use and looks nice.

Most importantly, it's not overkill and a pain to set up...like most of the others mentioned.

No one else use magento?
http://www.magentocommerce.com/

Its fairly easy to use and design for once you get the hang of it, lots of free and paid plugins. They have helpful forums but if you want their tech support its a boatload of money.

Theme forest has even started selling themes for it: http://themeforest.net/category/ecommerce/magento

Good luck in finding the right one for you =D
