I think I have sleep apnea

im convinced I have sleep apnea.

every once in a while I would wake up trying to catch my breathe almost like someone was holding a pillow in my mouth. this week so far twice, I wake up mid sleep choking because I can't breathe

plus I seem to be really fucking tired almost all day. I can sleep 10 hours or 6 hours and still feel like I need more.

my doctor said I need to come in for a sleep study test, anyone done one of these? I toss and turn a lot in my sleep and afraid if I have to go on the breathing machine I will choke myself with the hose!

I have a good friend that suffered from the same thing. He went to a sleep specialist that recommend a clear breathing mask connected to a small machine of some sort. He said the difference is tremendous.

And lazycash asks a good question because my friend is a big guy.

They give you a little test machine to use for a day or 2 and check the results first.thought I had it but it's just anxiety, apnea can be serious and expensive.a couple k for the machine and wearing a breather tube forever isn't a turn on for the bitches

I have the same problem too but I have never gone to a sleep specialist about it. It doesn't seem to happen to me though unless I am sleeping on my back. When I wake up and cannot breath for that split second or two, I feel like there is liquid in my throat and once I clear it, I can breathe again.

Is your throat dry when you wake up or do you feel like you are choking on spit or something?

Not to mention, I am a smoker so that could be my problem. I don't know.

I am 5"10 and weigh 230 lbs.

i hear ads on radio all the time about sleep apnea and these sleep clinics that want business - to me it sounds like a scam, for most people, who they will surely tell them they have sleep apnea and need to buy a machine and then keep coming back for more tests.

BUT it sounds like a couple of you guys really might have it so you should get it checked out.

being overweight i know is one of the main causes.

i had headaches for years and went to about every type of doctor and pseudo-doctor there is - every one of them told me i had this or that. chiropractor, food allergist, shrink, biofeedback psych, TMJ dentist specialist - medicine is a business.

Ghosts dude, they are fucking with you when you sleep.. Had the same problem when i lived in my older house, it continues to always do it with the people that sleep in that bedroom. Next time you wake up tell the spirit to go fuck himself and let you sleep. You should be straight afterwards. Let me know how it goes in email! Also if you try taking a mad bong rip before bed, this may also help.

Yeah, I agree with you.

But as far as getting tested, it only happens to me once in a while and if I were to go to the specialist, who's to say that it would happen during the test? I guess that's the main reason why I have never been to the specialist about it.

Hey bossku69 - how often does it happen to you? Is this an every night type of thing or random?

For sure - dropping the weight and quitting the smoking would definately help. I am getting so sick of smoking these cigarettes and am heavily addicted.

I have had sleep apena all my life and was not diagnosed untill I was 18 years old.

You may not always feel the effect of I but you either have it or don't. There are two types obstructed which I have. When I fall asleep my tounge collapses in my airway preventing my ability to breath.

The other type is where your brain forgets to tell your body to breath.

I have never taken it seriously untill latly. I wentball these years untill about a year ago id start falling asleep while standing and eventually hurt myself. I am a fat guy and I've always been told it was my diet but I have lost 60 pounds in the last 6 months by just using my.mask.

Point is 97% of the time I don't rem waking up and gasping for air but in my sleep study I never reached past level 2 sleep and out of 8 hours I ft a little more then a total hour of sleep.

Lack of oxygen can damage he brain, it can also affect stress levels which can take affect on re heart.

Man up and spend.the night being observed its one night that could change your entire life.

I don't mind going to the specialist bro. I just doubt that I will have the breathing problem the first time I get the testing procedure done since it tends to happen every 2 weeks or so. I will probably have to go a few times but that's fine with me because I would like to know what the hell is going on. But yeah, I am going to get it checked out though because that's some scary shit.

My Sons step father has sleep apnea... He has to wear a mask at night...

His 9 year old niece stayed at the house recently. She got scared during the night and entered their bedroom.. She screamed when she saw the mask - Said it was "Darth Vader' in bed (I SHIT YOU NOT!)

My gf has it and has a CPAP. It made a big difference, she wasn't tired in the mornings and thus less of a bitch. Her doctor told her to go to a sleep clinic that is located in the local hospital to get tested.

She says you get used to the mask and hose after a while, and considering the health effects apnea has on ones body, it's worth getting it checked out.

it's a serious problem that shouldn't be dealt with lightly. If you don't die from the damage it does to your brain due to lack of oxygen it will kill you by giving you really high blood pressure...

Losing weight helps a lot, opens up the airways more, those breath right strips help some too.

I have it, and yes it silently will fuck you up if you don't take care.

I was snoring very loud, waking up more tired than before I sleep, and was falling asleep every time I was in front of my computer working ... I was already affraid of driving.

Sleep apnea:

- fuck your heart
- fuck your mind (bad mood)
- high risk of a stroke and a shit load of other complications
- long term sleep apnea will damage your brain cells due to lack of o2

and much more stuff I can't remember now.

For 3 years I'm using a CPAP unit and DON'T be affraid, it will help you a lot.

I use this one of this pic

It will drastically change your quality of life

You really only need the test done once. The testing might be expensive, but once it's done, it's done. BiPAPs aren't all that expensive either. Anywhere from $800 to $5000, but the lower end models do just fine. Life expectancy is around five years but they will go longer than that if necessary.

Some of the "death scares" you hear about are probably just over exaggerations, but they can definitely make a change in a person's life. BiPAPs really aren't that big of a deal and if a person has issues, they should definitely look into it because their quality of life will certainly change.

One can go from a zombie to refreshed and energetic. Not looking into it is just laziness.

Check it out, it's awesome. Much better than the old one I had, which was similar to yours.

I seem to have sleep apnea - it's apparent mostly when I've had a few beers before bed.

I'm not a heavy guy though.

I also seem to have apnea when I'm awake. I have to blow my nose regularly or it all drips into my throat and I end up cough-choking...

:D

Forgetting about constant fatigue and feeling like shit.. people should also bear in mind that sleep apnea can kill you. If you are feeling like shit all the time, no matter what you should see a doctor. You might have any number of things wrong with you and many of them could be fatal (various cancers etc).

Or.. get advice from GFY doctors. They can't figure out why they aren't making money, but they are all definitely fitting substitutes for an individual with 8 years of education and medical training plus additional years of medical practice and diagnosing and treating patients. I'm sure their medical opinions and proposals for treatment are gold. Afraid you might a potentially fatal condition? do situps. How could you go wrong with solid advice like that?

and btw, sleep apnea is not just a product of being overweight or always resolved by weight loss... although its often a major factor.

I have one just like that but I can't adapt to it, I tried several times and no way I can sleep with that one. I have rhinitis and Sinusitis and I guess it plays a major factor in order to adapt to any kind of mask.

I left a message for my doctor to call me to get tested. Ive been waiting up more and more in the middle of the night gasping for air. its about once a week, but that has changed from about once a month or so.

The thing i've noticed most recently is my mental health. Its really poor, I am very tired and feel like my memory is shot. No matter how much I sleep, I never feel rested.

On top of that, its been a mystery to me why ive struggled to lose weight. I eat healthy and exercise but struggle to drop a few pounds. talking with a friend last week, which is how I believe this is what my problem is, he said he was in the same boat and after being on the machine he was easily able to drop the pounds and felt so much better.

I work out a lot, but mainly lift weights and no cardio... need to change that around

I know no one likes taking advice, but I saw a good friend of mine go downhill QUICK with his diabetes. He would take insulin but would also eat like shit and drink like a loon. Didn't see him for about a year and came back to find him looking like shit. He had to get an insulin device attached to him and has to wear these leg sock things that increase his circulation in his legs.

He is 28 (maybe 29 now) and the doctor told him he will probably lose both his legs in the next 5 years. Before, his doctor told him he would be just fine and live a good life... just be careful man

There is also a condition (can't remember the name off hand) where you can not get into REM sleep long enough and keep going between stage 3/4 to 2. Without being in stage 3 or 4 for long periods of time, you body will be exhausted... and therefore your mind as well.

A common thing you will notice is the fear of "falling" that jolts you awake. Most people get this when they are really tired but if you wake up with this often, it is a pretty sure sign. You can take medication but its bets to try some anti-anxiety pill first to see if that helps

Yeah I need to get my shit together if it isn't already too late, I have never smoked, drunk or done drugs... Just addicted to food alas, so diabetes really sucks !!! 6 years of pretty much ignoring it I am sure as already had it's impact on the body !!!

I'm type 2, so only on medication...but know the doctor wants to put me on insulin !!! I keep putting it off promising I will sort my shit out diet wise... But then just carry on with the crap

Is your throat dry when you wake up or do you feel like you are choking on spit or something?

Not to mention, I am a smoker so that could be my problem. I don't know.

I am 5"10 and weigh 230 lbs.
You said yours only happens when you sleep on your back, and every few weeks. Silly question, do you have a nightmare about something pressing on your chest before it happens? It could be night terrors...

That condition is precisely sleep apnea, because you stop breathing your sleep will become fragmented and if you can't make the complete sleep cycle your brain will always be tired ... imagine that year after year, it's almost as if you coudn't sleep for 10 years or more!

it took me a number of months to get an appointment but i finally had a sleep exam done the other day. I was supposed to stay the night just for examination without using the cpap machine at all but after 2 hours the apnea was so bad my oxygen levels were going down to 67% and falling. They woke me up and suggested i try out the cpap unit and within minutes i fell asleep for the rest of the night, oxygen levels were at 97% after that. So with half a nights sleep i woke up and felt totally recharged.. which is something i haven't felt in a long time.

So getting my machine prescribed to me this week.

oh and for the record i'm not fat. i've had this condition for years, even when i was a marathon runner so weight loss only helps a small % if you have a major blockage. There is a good chance that this is going to disappear my blood pressure problem and my energy levels should go through the roof. I'm just posting this to help encourage others to get on top of this problem if they do have it, sooner rather than later anyway ;)

I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, tried a CPAP machine, it worked once (I literally sprang out of bed the next morning) then after that my nose started blocking up. I tried it a few more times, including after some weeks to make sure it wasn't a cold, but no go. I ended up returning it.

Using that machine has done some permanent damage; since then my voice has been more nasal, my nose airway always feels a bit more constricted (more effort to draw in or exhale via the nose only) and I have recurring problems with a blocked up or runny nose. So CPAP isn't always a magic bullet.

I've known two people that have died from it. The went to sleep one night and that was it.

They're still dead.

What have you used to solve the problem of sleep apnea? I have it, albeit undiagnosed - however have done enough reading to be pretty sure - choking during sleep, extremely loud snorer, have been told I snore then stop breathing for 20 or 30 seconds then start snoring again etc...

Don't like the idea of the CPAP thing though.

Glad its helping you out

I have an appt next week, waiting on the confirmation. I had one setup a few weeks ago but ended up cancelling it because my shitty insurance I had wouldn't cover the test OR the equipment if needed.

new insurance from the wife's job covers 100%
