An Iranian court has convicted a US man of working for the CIA and sentenced him to death, according to a state radio report, amid tensions between Iran and the international community over a suspected new nuclear facility.

Iran says that Amir Mirzaei Hekmati received special training and served at US military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan before heading to Iran for his alleged intelligence mission.

The radio report on Monday did not say when the verdict was issued. Under Iranian law, he has 20 days to appeal.

The Obama administration denied that Hekmati was a CIA spy, and sharply criticised the Islamic Republic for what it called a pattern of arresting innocent people for political reasons.

The 28-year-old former military translator being held in Iran was born in Arizona and graduated from high school in Michigan. His family is of Iranian origin.

His father, a professor at a community college in Flint, Michigan, has said his son is not a CIA spy and was visiting his grandmothers in Iran when he was arrested.

Hekmati's trial took place as the US announced new, tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

The US and other Western countries believe Iran is developing atomic weapons, an accusation Iran denies.

Actually it's being done another way. There are cheap-ass "spies" like Chapman. These are always being used for political games and trade. On the other hand, the real spies simple get killed quietly w/o any publicity. Accident happens, someone dies, you know. This works everywhere in Russia, in the USA, wherever...

What is fucked up about this is the US goverment are very quick to get people extradited if it concerns tax fraud or other money related crimes, Yet they cant do a dam thing to get an ex marine out of Iran who has served for thier country. I guess its just a life so they dont care unless of course it would make them $$$. Typical fucked up goverments around the world .....

well it would be easy if we had a working relationship with iran.. but since we have sanctions against.. iran. its a issue..

i.e did you know its illegal for hosting companies to sell hosting or any service to anyone in iran? i think this is against all industries its an embargo against iran.

We just can't walk in and say hey.. give us our person back.... iran wants to see us destroyed.. do you really think they care?

My wife has family in Lebanon, and while it seems rather stable there now no one in the family here in the states ever discusses going there. I'm sure it's beautiful, but there is just zero interest.
