Ever gone to Peru?

Has anyone ever had a vacation in Peru? I want to go up the Andes mountains and explore Machu Pichu, but I don't know anyone who has gone there?

Any pointers?

we have talked with a number of people that have been in the recent 2 years. It is an amazing place, but right now with tourism so bad, be ready to get ripped off at every turn. Buy a drink they will short you for change every time. Rent something they will try and rip you off.

Just over and over. The people said they had no problem with real crimes like robbery etc. but that they had to watch their cash all the time and that it ruined thier trip.

Now maybe with the right tour company you can avoid that but be real careful

Other wise hit Mexico and see some of the ruins there. Plenty to see and a LOT LESS BS with the money.

The image you posted has buildings that look like buildings of Aztecs or Mayans. They look beautiful. The tall perky mountains look beautiful with clouds of steam surrounding them. Take a look at beautiful formations of rocks and stones.

Peru is a country in western South America. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

you can buy a donkey for $50, not sure what you would do with a donkey, but it's a great deal for sure

Macchu Picchu is beautiful, an amazing experience and a place to be at least once in the lifetime. This being said, Peruvians got ultra super extremely ridiculously greedy. Now you can only go with a guide, guides are like 100 bucks a pop (yes, they make up to 2000 A DAY) and if you want to go to certain places or be in a place just 5 minutes more they will ask you for more money or GTFO. Surrounding places (restaurants, hotels, transport) are more or less in the same path. They are really ruining it.

If you go from Lima, watch out. Crime isn't necessarily violent, but sooner or later they will steal you something, it's almost a rule. And not necessarily in the streets, you can be stolen at your own hotel room, so if you put money in the safe, use the main hotel's safe and write the numbers of your traveler checks and/or bills.

And you'll always have an army of kids begging for money, they will insist until you get annoyed and give some money to them. Have A LOT of spare change to give or do like I did: buy candy or fruits and instead of money give them something to eat.

Last but not least: careful with tours. The places they go are really beautiful, but some of the cheap options are very dubious to say the least. Play safe, and if in doubt, ask the Tourists Office (you'll find a lot of them). And avoid police whenever possible

Wifey and I are spending 3 months in South America. We leave in 3 weeks and will be blogging the process on one of our non-adult sites.

Just had friends return from Machu Pichu and they said it was fantastic. Also had another mate live over in Peru for 4 years and he said it was great. Crime isn't as bad as people make out you just have to be on lookout, he never had anything stolen in 4 years and he is a gringo.
