PayPal... doing the leg work for identity thieves

Last month I noticed my paypal debit card expired. I went online and went to setup to get a new one and now it asks for my social security number. Not sure how I fucked this up but I must of mistyped it as it said my SSN # does not match the information they have on file for me... huh?

I get an email saying they want me to send in a copy of my drivers license, copy of my social security card, proof of address and a pay stub or utility bill.

GET THE FUCK OUT

I sent them a copy of my DL, it was black and white along with a utility bill. I told them to call me for my SSN #, I'm not sending a copy to them. They respond back saying the DL must be color and scanned, no photograph.

Seems to me they are just laying the ground work for someone to hack in and steal all their info. Just curious I call the state SSN office and the woman on the phone tells me its a bad idea to send that to them... 3 emails later, no response.

Guess I'll just have to open a new account

BTW, banks here even in the US do not ask for that. I just opened two accounts at two large banks, neither one asked for copies of my SSN card nor pay stub/tax return and utility bill.

Yes, they have put all that money they've earned from piracy to good use!

+1, I can't say enough good things about PayPal. I've been using them for 6 years now for everything...ebay, hosting, sponsor payments, online purchases. I had my account hacked once and the person went on a spending spree, Paypal froze my account and got ALL of my money back within a week and gave me my account back good as new.

I would choose PayPal over Paxum any day.

Ive been using them since 2001 and only had 2 issues, if you count this then 3.

First time I was selling ebooks on ebay and without warning, shut down my account. couldnt of come at a worse time as I was on spring break and that was the only money I had.

A few years ago I was selling some stuff on CL. a local guy asked if he could pay me through paypal since it was a TV for $2500. I thought it wouldn't be a problem, he had a local phone number and all. He paid and about 10 minutes before he showed up I got an email from Paypal about fraud and they suspended my account. He claims he never did anything wrong but I refused to give him the TV.

Lots of people have issues with PP being shady: http://paypalsucks.com/

Sucks man, hope you can work it out with them. No doubt we have all had these kinds of problems with online companies but Paypal I'm sure can be a bit more trusted than others. Been good with Paypal for almost 10 years and tens of thousands of transactions later. If they are asking for certain info I'm sure they know what they're doing and are asking for a reason?

.. or many it's the illuminati? Dun dun dun dun....

Lemme get this straight. Paypal asks you for some info, which they obviously already have from you, as a security measure to make sure it's you, you give Paypal incorrect (ie false, to them) info, then you complain because they want to make sure you are not a fraudster trying to rip them and/or you off? That about right?
