Who's your favorite American President?

This is not a political thread, it's merely presidents day in a couple hours. Give a shout to what president deserves some praise.

My favorite is Ronald Reagan. I was off the coast of Iran between the fleet and the coast when Ronny took office.

Ronald Reagan, at a high of 77, the oldest president to hold office and the first that was an actor

At one point, his approval rating was up to 73%, 63% when he left office

During his Presidency, Ronald Reagan pursued policies that reflected his optimism in individual freedom, expanded the American economy, and contributed to the end of the Cold War. The "Reagan Revolution", as it came to be known, aimed to reinvigorate American morale, and reduce the people's reliance upon government

Probably did more for the gay community than any other president. His column was very popular.
In the late 1970s he wrote a response in his LA Herald-Examiner column to the organization backing the California Briggs Initiative, stating that he opposed the proposed ban on gay public school teachers. Reagan's daughter, Patti Davis, wrote an article in the New York Times where she recalled her father talking about Rock Hudson's homosexuality in an accepting and tolerant manner.

Credited with increasing spending on national defense and diplomacy which contributed to the end of the Cold War, That and the way he negociated lower prices for oil, really hurt the USSR

Despite Reagan's stated desire to cut spending, federal spending grew during his administration. However, economist Milton Friedman pointed out that non-defense spending as a percentage of national income stabilized throughout Reagan's term, breaking a long upward trend; the number of new regulations added each year dramatically decreased as well

He came out with the
Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986
Which I see in the news the current administration is still fighting

McKinney?Vento Homeless Assistance Act

I know a lot of people here are going to bash him, But he was able to work with the Democrats to get things done, he worked very closely with Tip O'neil, the Democratic Speaker of the house. Under his presidency, the country was more patriotic which is reflected by his approval numbers.

One of my favorite quotes from Ronny was "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem."

I'm not going to argue about anything with this, these are facts. No President can have a perfect presidency. I think my second favorite is Lincoln.

Being that I've only been old enough to care during Clinton, Bush and Obama, I have to choose Clinton.

He did a lot of fucked up shit, but him and Newt worked well together to get stuff done and it seems like everybody was doing well those years. A solid middle class, which was my upbringing.

Yes, I agree, Clinton did some fucked up things with White Water and other things, but he did work with Newt to overhaul the welfare system, balance the budget and a few other things.

We need a uniter as our next president. I don't believe it's impossible because of the current state of politics. I just think it will take an extraordinary person. No such person is running, IMHO. We need somebody more in the center, who will have some qualities that appeal to both parties and who will refuse to stand down when they are convinced they know best.

It has to be a president that will work with both parties, they need to be the president, not leader of one of the parties

Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837 – June 24, 1908) was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. Cleveland is the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms (1885–1889 and 1893–1897) and therefore is the only individual to be counted twice in the numbering of the presidents. He was the winner of the popular vote for president three times—in 1884, 1888, and 1892—and was the only Democrat elected to the presidency in the era of Republican political domination that lasted from 1861 to 1913.

Cleveland was the leader of the pro-business Bourbon Democrats who opposed high tariffs, Free Silver, inflation, imperialism and subsidies to business, farmers or veterans. His battles for political reform and fiscal conservatism made him an icon for American conservatives of the era.[1] Cleveland won praise for his honesty, independence, integrity, and commitment to the principles of classical liberalism.[2] Cleveland relentlessly fought political corruption, patronage, and bossism. Indeed, as a reformer his prestige was so strong that the reform wing of the Republican Party, called "Mugwumps", largely bolted the GOP ticket and swung to his support in 1884.[3]

Disaster hit the nation as his second term began when the Panic of 1893 produced a severe national depression that Cleveland was unable to reverse. It ruined his Democratic party, opening the way for a Republican landslide in 1894, and for the agrarian and silverite seizure of his Democratic party in 1896. The result was a political realignment that ended the Third Party System and launched the Fourth Party System and the Progressive Era.[4]

Cleveland took strong positions and was heavily criticized. His intervention in the Pullman Strike of 1894 to keep the railroads moving angered labor unions nationwide and angered the party in Illinois; his support of the gold standard and opposition to Free Silver alienated the agrarian wing of the Democratic Party.[5] Furthermore, critics complained that he had little imagination and seemed overwhelmed by the nation's economic disasters—depressions and strikes—in his second term.[5] Even so, his reputation for honesty and good character survived the troubles of his second term. Biographer Allan Nevins wrote: "in Grover Cleveland the greatness lies in typical rather than unusual qualities. He had no endowments that thousands of men do not have. He possessed honesty, courage, firmness, independence, and common sense. But he possessed them to a degree other men do not."[6]

Yes, but I'm sure 99% of the people using the term don't realize the $100 bill is not a "dead president".

Oh well.. rappers usually come up on 1's, 5's, 10's, and 20's through drug dealing anyhow.

reagan was likeable ,so was clinton in some ways

presidents shouldn't talk so much. they should be more like a king.

Make strong vague statements like the bible.

"america needs to kill those who need to kill"

"the stronger we are the stronger we become"

"iran is a rubiks cube, we need to teach them chess"

I suppose if you have to choose between mediocre, pretty bad, and "holy crap he's fucked things up more than all other presidents combined" ...

Hopefully in 2016 we'll get a great president, it's been too long. I almost don't care of it's democrat great ala Kennedy / Roosevelt or republican great ala Reagan / Lincoln. I say 2016 because I don't hold much hope for 2012, though you never know.

the best is Theodore Roosevelt

1. for inventing Man-eating piranhas. by the sounds of it he would go on lots of ttips then tell people tall stories. one as about man eating fish. in fact they do not kill people.

2. for inventing the teddy bear.

ah, I didn't know. thanks for this info

I found this on Inet

No, he was not ever the President of the US, not even temporarily or as a result of the death of a sitting President.

No, he was never President.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers and a genius. He helped create the American system of government. However, he never served as president.
Nope! He was pretty famous back in the day though. Known as "the most civilized of the savages" by the Europeans.

i like clinton as he did not care.

i remeber a few years ago he came to the uk and was playing golf. near by a couple was getting married. they asked if he would pose with them. he said yes.

he stands just looking down her top. its great.

the best is when he sees the chansolor of germany who was a big chap. he spoke no english.

they both hug and clinton says i thought of you last night when i watched the sumo westerling. when its translated the german chacerlow goes cold. seeing that clinton tries to make up for it by saying 'i too am fat'. german chancerlers do not like that.

not as bad though as the italian one (who just quit) (bunga bunga one) who when he went to see this female german chacerler was greated at his car. when he got out he was on his mobile and walked away from her. she was fuming. he also said when a recent natural desater in italy when people had to live in tents that it would be a holiday.

You mean like this guy? He's the closest thing America's ever had to a king.

Reagan? Not political? Lol.... right, right. He's one of the Presidents that started the problems of today, but he's your man out of all the others that actually did something great.

My fav to read about is Andrew Jackson.

Like Obama? The man is about as center as it gets. He's worked with both sides a ton, tried to get them together a ton, and even when the parties locked things up, he still got things done. Actually, the man has gotten shit tons done with the amount of anti-obama everything that has come out.

Are you serious? Nixon was probably one of the worst presidents in US history.
Its not true.

Nixson was considered a great man by most leaders of other countries.

He did a great deal.

Many came to his funeral.

His problem was while he was good at the oversea polices he was not liked in the usa a\nd probably was lead astray.

He was never going to be populkar as he was never that type of person.

When he left being a president, he gained a lot of respect and i think did a lot of work.

If I remeber he brought china into working along side rather than being external as it was.

He was very clever.

My fav to read about is Andrew Jackson.
Reagan may have helped end the cold war.

At very least he got ussr to reduce its nukes.

If anything that alone is somthing that history should give him credit for.

Nixon is an interesting case. Today, we associate his name primarily with Watergate. In his first term, his approval ratings were high, averaging 56%. (For comparison Obama is currently around 44%, Bush averaged 49%, Clinton 55%. So Nixon was considered as good as Obama is bad, and slightly better than Clinton.)

Surveys of historians suggest that Nixon was one of the brighter and more capable presidents but Watergate has completely overshadowed that. I suppose it goes to show it doesn't matter how smart you are or how well you do, if you can't be trusted that's all that matters. Nixon was probably smarter and more capable than 99% of us, but that didn't matter after he was dishonest. We could learn from his mistakes.

Sure, he sent guns to the Mexican Drug cartels, he sent drones to Pakistan after we killed Osama and the reason things are locked up is because of him.

Glad to have you back. I missed you. I'm going to stay out of the political debates on GFY. I have learned a lot from them, which is the best part

Nixon was the best at foriegn affairs, loved the flash of his peace signs while we were fighting in Vietnam.

Best

David Rice Atchison may have served 1 day according to the State Department. Don't think he even knew it. So no harm, no foul.

Lincoln & FDR saved this county. Read their stories. Lincoln fought every day to save the Union, had to fight his on Cabinet. FDR almost had to send Henry Ford & crew to prison, as they wanted a dictatorship based on what Hitler had in Germany.

Reagan trained and gave weapons to Afghans, Angolaians and Nicaraguas.

I don't agree with the war, but being that we are at war, I agree with his no pussy footing around attitude. The Countries that harbor bad guys have already been warned, and congress has already approved this war on terrorism. So really no reason to fuck around.

It was the Republicans that said they would do everything they could to make sure Obama fails, vote everything down, be against anything he does, even before he did anything, they started. All without regards to American's or our Country. So yeah, you could say it's because of him, but it's not his fault, and that's all that matters.

I typically go on and off with gfy... depending on what time of year it is

Weren't the Afghans defending themselves against the USSR at the time? Who are the Mexican Drug cartels protecting themselves from?

So it's ok to attack any country we want? Thats what got us in that mess oin the first place isn't it?
Or is this of those because the GOP did it, it's ok?

Reagan worked with the democrats and Clinton worked with the GOP, what they didn't do was bash the other party and blame the other party in every speech.
