"A woman unwittingly took her own picture as she unlocked a stolen iPhone - only for the image to be sent to the owner who then called police.

An app downloaded on to the phone takes a picture of anyone who tries to unlock it, maps their location and then sends the information to the owner in an email, Sussex Police said.

The phone was stolen from the Coalition nightclub in Brighton, East Sussex, earlier this month.

Police said they do not know whether the woman pictured was responsible for the theft but they appealed for her or anyone who recognises her to contact them.

Pc Gavin Crute, of Sussex Police, said: "The owner of the camera has a rather cool app that takes a picture of anyone who tries to unlock it, maps their current location and then sends all the info back to the owner in an email.

"We know where and when the photo was taken and it appears to be in a vehicle with quite a large sunroof.

"We don't know that the woman is the person who stole the camera, but she obviously has had some connection with it in the meantime and I'd like to speak to her about it."

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101."

Good point. She might not have stolen it, Owner could have dropped it. She could have tried to unlock it so she could return it.

I have found phones on the side of the road before. People put them on the top of their car and drive off.

couple weeks ago my mom did this very thing and I ended up calling it looking for it and a nice guy told us where he was and returned it. He wouldnt even accept the gratuity I was offering for being so helpful. He was just riding his bike to work and found it on the road.

I have one from Best Buy that does this... I think. For $10/mo they replace the phone for $0 lost, stolen or damaged. Other services don't cover if its lost or stolen, so it's not to bad IMO.

Ok. So someone finds a phone.. They automaticly say it is stolen... NOOOOOO. The fucking asshole that had the phone lost it... I suggest that anyone that finds a phone take it and place it under the bumper of any civil servant vehicle they can find. Let them explaine how they have been driving around with a so called stolen phone on their car.
