I do 60 gig SSD drive.
Works nice fast and totaly silent. However i parter the drive in 2, 1 for windows and 1 part for video converting. 30 gig is however way to small for windows 7. You need at least 2 if you use it for video converting and making use of the faster drive speed writing and reading.

I put one in my laptop. The instant on is bad ass though I do not reboot much. I have noticed a huge difference when editing vids or playing heavy duty video games.

I use one on my home server for the OS and system files. Its like a whole different machine, everything loads so damn fast now.
Got a new 17" Macbook Pro yesterday, going to pull out the optical dive and put a SSD in its place and move the OS and system files to that as well. SSD = the way to go

I will be adding a SSD in my PC soon enough. Should go well with my i7 and 8gb of ram. Mix that with a much faster hard drive and things will fly.

My Macbook Air has a 256GB SSD. I haven't had any issues, aside from it crashing less than a month after I bought it with unrecoverable drive errors and needing to be replaced. You know -- nothing major.

I would go with Intel 320 or Samsung 830 and stay away from anything with a Sanforce controller

Fuck OCZ. I had 3 of them die within about 4 months. Newegg was great about it though. After the third one died they gave me a credit for the full amount which I spent on a 120GB Intel. So far it has been great. MUCH better than the OCZ that was so highly rated when I bought it.

crucial or intel, just take into consideration, ssd's have shelf life. not sure how much it is affected on a desktop because im sure you arent doing a lot of database queries etc. also keep a backup handy.

SSDs are fast at loading lots of small files, like for booting. (Aka low latency). That's because they don't have to spend time seeking to each file. For continously writing one big file like a video, (high throughput) a fast magnetic wins and has a lot more capacity. That assumes your drive isn't BADLY fragmented. |

I'm switching to using them as my main O/S drive in all my computers. I have a separate 7200 rpm mechanical drive to put musics/movies, etc. on.
I use an older OCZ Agility 60gb on my main desktop I just load Windows 7 and a few often used programs. I bought a Samsung more recently on my 2nd desktop when I updated my XP to 7. Lately the Samsung, Intel, and Crucial drives have the best reputation for reliability. On sale you can generally get them for around $1 per gb lately. |

Wow... wait, what the fuck did you do to go through 3 of them within 4 months? It's not like they're made of macaroni and glue.
1... maybe. 2... the chances are in the hundreds of thousands. But 3? You're either exaggerating, or you're the one who is doing some shit wrong. ![]() |

If you really want to go fast try out a Revodrive 3 x2
SSD's that use SATA always seem to have problems... |

Did you buy 100 of them and three died, or is there a cooling problem or did you buy three at once and UPS ran over the package ... ?
If none of these apply that you know of, I'm curious because I run some machines pretty warm. I'd be curious what temp yours were when they died. |

Yes, stick with Intel 320 Series and/or any other drive that has capacitors to prevent data loss / corruption during a power failure or hard shut off.
THere are not many SSD drives out with capacitors though... Intel 320 Series while not the SUPER DUPER FASTEST FUCK SHIT out there right now, is still FAST -- its a freaking SSD! and will keep you SAFE too. Faster than any home user will really need unless you just like to spend extra money and have the extra risk just so you can be a benchmark jockey. In servers we use Intel 320 Series SSD's due to the reliability features they built into them! We will also not move to any other SSD model unless they have the capacitor feature built in to safeguard against data loss.

The machine wasn't that warm. Just an i7 (not overclocked), single nvidia card and three case fans. There were two other WD Black drives as well but they were a couple of bays away and shouldn't have been doing much most of the time. I had another die in the same time period in another machine I built as more of a check-in and POS for my office. Heat could have been an issue there. I built that computer in a mini-itx case. It always did run warm anyway but I (accidentally) left it running over a holiday weekend and turned off the AC in my office. When I came back on Monday the drive was dead. It was a sandisk that I bought on clearance at a local office store so I wasn't really surprised on that one. I lost a vertex ssd in another machine that I bought on craigslist. It was ridiculously cheap for the whole machine. Since it was second hand I can't say what kind of life it had but it lasted 6 months or so after I bought it. I have 4 SSDs in use right now and they've been fine for months (two intel, two vertex) so I guess I just got a rough start. On my home machines I do use acronis to get a full backup every few days just to be safe. Office machines I don't worry about. Data is stored on a server and I can reimage those in minutes if lose a drive.

I've got a Crucial M4 in my Mac Faux and I'm debating whether to put on in my MacBook Pro.
The problem I have is I like having a lot of space, which is a problem on my desktop since I can stick 4 odd drives in it.
