Playing in Photoshop

Got inspired by some collages I saw tonight and decided to play around with photoshop.
You guys think it looks good? Grabbed some random images from google and deviant art.

I want to find a new mainstream job and I don't have much for graphic design so I may make a few of these if you guys think it looks ok.

Thanks in advance for your input.

you know how it looks, the better half ... but it does matter how much did you took from deviant art in design even idea is a steal, so you know but does matter how professional you are and how much do you get paid, if this is for fiverr, it is good and doesnt matter how much of it is stolen, but if you work for some big company on their image, you know what i mean ... have luck in your mainstream journey!

Thanks buddy. I think it looks good but I only have really made website layouts for years at my job. I don't do any graphic design other than that. There are some things I was not sure about so I was curious if someone would mention it.

The stuff I took from deviant art was the image of the woman, the blue background was an image i stretched blurred and gaussian blur/accented edges x 3 or 4 times. The moon was from google images. I didn't take an idea I took some images and modified/put em together.

I am still going to work hard at failing in adult just need a decent mainstream job while doing so lol.

Thanks again.

Hard to see how talented / skilled you are after one image but if you want to go mainstream too, what's stopping you? At least try, there's nothing to lose..

Good luck!

Design is good, but if you are looking to work in mainstream be sure to practice designs from scratch with everything designed by you. Some employees wont let you take anything from internet for their designs as you took now some random images from google and deviant art to make your design.

Thanks Loreen.

I have a mainstream job making websites but the pay is pretty bad. I don't have much confidence in my work sometimes because I feel I should be in a better spot by now. I want to turn in some resumes soon but I don't want to be laughed at. I would like to get into like a smaller web/graphic design company around Miami or NYC/CT area.

I just wanted to make sure the image itself looks ok. I wasn't sure if the blue background looked too rough. I added some dashed lines and some arrows and I wasn't sure about as well. I was curious if anyone would say oh her this doesn't match or that doesn't look right.

Thanks. I don't ever use google or deviant art for client work, I always use Istock, 123rf, etc. This isn't a job, just a personal collage so I figured it would be ok but maybe I should buy stock photography instead. I was looking at some other work by different people and they were just snagging shit from the web since it wasn't being used for profit.

Here are the orig images.

What I wanted to do was maybe make a few of these like a water based one with a blue focus, maybe one in a forest with a green focus, etc. Like I said I really have nothing for graphic design and I just want to have something in there soon that looks ok. There is a really nice looking job in Miami I'd like to apply for before it get snagged. Just want to cover all my bases.

Thanks again for all of the comments, I really do appreciate it.

This graphic design you made is not top quality. It doesn't look too bad. I like exciting backgrounds and geometric shapes.

anexsia, thanks for the compliments. I am in Southwest Florida and most of the sites I make are for old dudes that don't wanna go to nuts with the look. It was fun to do something different and I am glad ppl are diggin it. Thanks again.

Thanks gimmie and loreen for commenting. I enjoy both of your work very much so I am glad you guys took the time to comment.

I am a bit out of my element when stuff like this but I know it would help me very much to have something different on my personal site. I had a nice custom fb business page but they made them all the same (timeline) now so I feel I need to add something else.

Thanks Video for that. I don't ever consider my stuff the best or like completely done even. I love going to places like www.depthcore.com or www.thekdu.com and I know I can't compete with their worst guy. I am hoping it would do ok for a dependable but smaller web shop. There is a popular clothing line that has had a job posted for like 70 days, the post died and they had to redo it lol. That's one of the main ones I want to target. They have a fairly simple looking cart for all their brands so maybe I will have a chance.

Thanks everyone, I feel a lot more confident about my idea.
I will prob try to make another few collages and hopefully someone will bite when I send out my res.

Love you guys, no homo.

Talking about 1998 why is your own website layout done in <table>'s?

I am not trying to become a graphic guy, I just need some filler in that area.
It's like an extra credit kinda deal.

This look is a bit popular right now in some channels.
Maybe I will do better on the other ones

My browser is fast and Interntez is fast too, why worry? But collages of that kind are outdated.

Fuck my stuff, i have a ton of connections, mate. Just saying if you want to jump in it has to be better. And if I was jumping in I'd start a template site, there is a ton of buyers for that.

I think what it needs is a howling wolf in the background, like off to the left of the moon.

Here, you can chop this image to use:

Hey I appreciate your feedback very much. Hope I didn't seem rude, sarcastic, or like I was fighting you.

I am a big fan of collages. I wish I was good at using 3d programs so I could make some crazy shit lol. A lot of the really nice work is made partially in like Maya or Cinema 4d and mixed into PS.

I am not confident enough in my ability to apply as a graphic designer, the jobs would have to be a web design position, or maybe like a photo retoucher, something like that. I have to make more stuff so I will keep that advice to heart about it looking outdated.

Bad advice. If his work contained elements of other peoples work and or copyright images, his employer might be held liable and forced to pay alot in damages.

This was not made for a client. I spent maybe 3 or 4 hours last night in Photoshop just playing around. We only use stock photography (Istock/Getty, 123rf, Crbis, etc.) or stuff we shoot in house (usually products) at my job or if I do any freelance work. I am not trying to sell prints or like use it for advertising, just to show something I made on my own personal site. Most of the deviantart stuff allow you to use their pics with credit given if its for personal use. I will have to look into that.

I hear ya. One day you see stuff made by pros you think WTF i am loser. Well, as usual, there is always someone who does better stuff.

In general, getting a BFA would add a lot more confidence. I'd go with Sessions.edu if its a budget, and I'd choose Pratt.edu if you can afford it.

it's an ok start, but I can't even glance at that typography without it screaming "amateur", basic attention to detail is really important

I think almost anyone would have a hard time getting a position at any serious design company without going to some art college, competition is pretty fierce these days, unless they had some seriously outstanding credentials to make up for it

You know, I put that little reflection thing under it and thought to myself, that isn't really good but I felt it was so empty alone I wasn't sure. I did that last, it was late and I probably put less effort into it than I should have. Thanks for your advice.

In reference to the college thing:
I couldn't really afford college back when I got out of school.
I was a bit of a douche in school regarding schoolwork, in hindsight I should have tried but I was a dumb teenager who thought he knew about life.
That being said, I wasn't getting any scholarships.

I went to a vocational school for a couple of years and took commercial art and web design. The way things are now, I couldn't really afford to pay for classes. I really need to work full time, too many bills, problems. I would love to if I could though.

I didn't post this to be like hey I am the shit right?!?! I honestly just wanted to know if you guys thought this would look ok in a portfolio. I have a lot of respect for everyone here. A lot of you are successful and treat me very well on the boards. I knew you guys are knowledgeable and would be honest. If you ask your real life friends they will just say hey it looks good, great job, etc., they don't really tell you what you need to hear.

Overall, I got some good and bad reviews towards it and have a lot to think about. Maybe I shouldn't make a set but just try to make something completely different. I will probably focus on beefing up that text for now.

Thanks again.

The best designers start out like this guy.. Just goofing around in his bedroom. Then it overwhelms you......and theres no going back.
You can take any class level you want according to your expertise level. But when you apply for a job having a BFA will benefit much comparing to your only demonstrating selective courses taken. I'm talking real job not just serving GFY.

You will never be the designer that you want to be if you don't believe in yourself.

..
I wasn't criticising the reflection idea actually, that is a matter of taste and is fine, the attention to detail that matters a lot and is something that people learn in that "bollocks" typography 101 course someone mentioned... centering and spacing and kerning and all those very basic things that all designers are supposed to know and pay attention to.

You can blow a whole design and many hours of quality work by not paying attention to minor details.

Type can be a thing of beauty and is so important, yet it is often very poorly executed by many... on the internet especially.

Don't be discouraged by the college thing if it is not in your plans, it just changes your possible choices and paths. You will have to become a salesman and get your own gigs as it is probably not going to be as easy as sending a resume and getting hired.
