What is a good wireless router?

I think my wireless router is about to crap out as the signal seems to be getting weak and spotty, so any recommendations on a solid replacement?

Pretty much I've only used Linksys; I've only had two.

Wireless in basic is a total crap. But I guess that depends on the service of your provider...

D-Link Systems D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router. Not very price and outputs a very strong signal. Nice admin panel. No complaints about it - have had it for three years now.

Just don't buy Netgear. Their new routers are garbage, especially the high end ones.

D-Link, stay away from Linksys! I have thrown away 3 of them shortly after the warrany expired. You can check out all of the Linksys refurbished deals at tigerdirect as proof of the low quality.

How is that proof? There are all kinds of refurbished d-link routers out there too and netgear.
For every failed router story, there is a success story. I've had nothing but good luck with linksys and misery with d-link.

Wizzo, if you buy netgear, d-link, or linksys they are all good. Find the best price on one.

Had no issues with Linksys over the years, so I'd stick with them. I tried a d-link and had connection issues with Mac machines on my network.

Airport

Airport works well with or with Mac or PC.
Had to replace the 10 year-old Airport recently as I had to reboot daily. Think they would have software to tell you the hardware is failing.

But my usual problem is the cable company. Since the new cable box, I only have to reboot monthly instead of several times a day, but always in the middle of an important download. Sneeze and the box goes out

Several times had to take cable modems back, Worst was box didn't work. Took it back and the CSR said, ""you're the 3'rd one today." Why don't you test the boxes 1st?

http://www.ubnt.com/unifi if you want some high-end equipment.

Otherwise TP-Link WR-1043ND is a good choice.

stay away from Pirelli - my router is exactly four meters from the bathroom and when I sit on the can, my tablet loses the connection every two and a half minutes; that totally defeats the purpose of owning a tablet ;(

Pretty much all consumer level routers suck the bone, and the only thing that allows them to keep sucking so bad is that most customers will never know that the router is the problem, or will never put it in situations that the flaws will be discovered.

Having said that, I have a dir-655 dlink that after upgrading its firmware over quite a long period eventually was very solid and very functional.

I actually use tomato custom firmware installed on an RT-N16 now, but the dir-655 had better range.

I think the pragmatic advice is - buy from a big box store, start with the cheapest that includes the features you want, if it doesn't perform then take it back and get a different one. With routers I've often found that you dont get what you pay for. I've had MANY experiences with equipment that just was not fit for any heavy use right out of the box and for pretty high prices too.

Good luck
