Hug a cop?

Detroit woman's deadly hug with cop a "freak accident"

(CBS/AP) DETROIT - The death of a woman shot in the chest after she hugged an off-duty police officer from behind during a party is a tragic, unfathomable accident, Detroit's police chief said Monday.

Adaisha Miller was dancing and celebrating what would have been her 25th birthday the next day, when she hugged the officer from behind during a party Sunday, her mother and authorities said. She died later of gunshot wounds to the chest.

Hug triggers officer's gun, kills woman

Police Chief Ralph Godbee told reporters at a news conference her death is an "unfathomable" accident and the officer is "very remorseful."

"We are profoundly sad at their loss," he said, referring to Miller's family.

Godbee said the gun was in a waist holster made of " a very soft neoprene type material," which would have allowed the trigger to be activated. He said there's no evidence the officer fired the gun, and he believes the gun discharged after Miller hugged the officer from behind during a party at the officer's home.

"There was some manipulation along the officer's waistline (that) he did not control," Godbee told reporters.

The officer is on desk duty while the case is fully investigated. His name was not officially released, but witnesses told CBS Detroit affiliate WWJ that he is Officer Issac Parrirh.

Police union lawyer John Goldpaugh said the officer didn't know Miller.

"This was just a freak accident," Goldpaugh said, according to WWJ. "They were having a party and the next thing, a woman is dead. He's devastated by what happened."

Police said previously that the bullet punctured Miller's lung and hit her heart, and she died at a hospital.

Her mother, Yolanda McNair, said the shooting never should have happened.

"All she wanted to do was enjoy the weekend for her birthday," McNair said, WWJ reported. "She had every right to enjoy turning 25 and look beyond that."

if we're supposed to believe that gun went off while being hugged, then how do you explain multiple gunshot wounds to the chest? How do you hug someone around their waist? Holstered guns also point down, not at chest level. I don't get it.

Pretty fucking simple really.

It's not multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, it's multiple wounds to chest. The bullet punctured her lung and hit her heart. The heart is physically located in the rib cage, surrounded by the lungs, so it's not difficult to imagine that at all.

I mean really, that's like 8th Science right there.

What about the rest of the questions? The angle, the safety?

dont guns point downward? what was he doing letting her man handle his waist?

the cop is at fault....he was at a party with drunk people and let one man handle him and his weapon.

not a malicious act...however really friggin stupid....i dont see him being charged with anything....but perhaps moved further down the food chain....like tied to a desk the rest of his career.

What about the angle? The gun was on the cop's waist, pointing up, perfect angle.

Safety should have been on, but it it seems it wasn't.

I thought about this too at first, but quickly dismissed it. If you put a gun in a "soft" holster and then I bear hug you from behind, I can see the gun being twisted and pointing back up towards the person doing the bear hug.

If your standing behind someone and push on the grip of the gun, the gun starts to move - and the barrel starts to move back towards the person.

Keep in mind we aren't talking about a leather holster here, we are talking about a "neoprene holster" - which doesn't seem to be too secure on the belt.

Do a photo search for "neoprene gun holster" and you'll see what I mean.

The cop was at a party at his own house... He was armed. In hindsight it sounds like a horrible idea, but cops carry their firearms with them all the time when they are off duty, right?

The cop wasn't at fault at all. He was wearing his firearm. She hugged him, she touched the firearm, she caused it to go off.

well it is all very unfortunate, especially for the dead girl.
he should have known better.....party at your own house?
he is an idiot for wearing a gun around his house.

in the usa maybe they carry their guns around wiuth them all the time.

not in canada....and i know some high up cops
you know the ones who dont wear uniforms
they dont have their gun on them when we drink

Maybe it was like this?

America have a crazy gun policy. In Poland cops/soldiers can't carry weapon when being off duty.

2nd Amendment, Right to bare arms, from December 15, 1791... yeah let's keep a law that was created long ago for the American Revolution (correct me if i am wrong, i am not history major)
No one should be able to carry a firearm but a police Officer

"There was some manipulation along the officer's waistline (that) he did not control," Godbee told reporters.

She obviously pulled the wrong trigger.

You know... I always find cases like this interesting.

Predictably, like it's some kind of rule, the DA will say "not enough evidence was found" to make a conviction. Literally EVERY time. EVERY fucking time.

But if it was you, or I... even if they have purely circumstantial evidence... you're DOING TIME.

I think it's about time we knock this "police courtesy" shit off, and stop allowing police to get away with crazy shit most people would never in their wildest dreams be able to get away with. This goes for all incidents involving police officers, not just this one...

You'd really be surprised how many cop lovers back up this kind of activity. Every time there's a story like this involving the police in a conservative county, about 50,000,000 cop lovers come to the cop's rescue and demonize anyone who speaks against them... saying things like "It's obvious what side of the law you're on..." and "These are our hero's! These are the people who protect us!" and the famous one... uttered by the DA in Yuba County recently... "we prosecute CRIMINALS... not police officers."

Exactly. It doesn't take Columbo to come up with some good questions for how the fuck this happened.

I saw this in the paper yesterday and it didn't mention that she was hugging him from behind. I was wondering how the bullet went in and hit her heart if she was hugging him from the front. Now it makes sense.
