I'm Voting for Romney. But you MORONS are misquoting Obama, and that's PATHETIC

I can't wait until Obama is out of office. But that doesn't mean it's okay to twist his words and take them out of context. Trying to stir up crap by saying Obama said something like "If you've got a business - you didn't build that" and implying he's talking about small business owners... is PATHETIC and DISHONEST.

Here's the full speech:

"We’ve already made a trillion dollars’ worth of cuts. We can make some more cuts in programs that don’t work, and make government work more efficiently…We can make another trillion or trillion-two, and what we then do is ask for the wealthy to pay a little bit more …

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me, because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something – there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the GI Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for president – because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.”

Seriously, take a little pride in yourself and hold yourself to a higher standard.

From Jeff Tucker:

Quote:
Meanwhile, you probably saw that Republicans are making hay out of President Obama's statement: "If you've got a business, you didn't build that." Defenders of the president immediately cried foul: Read the sentence in the context of his entire speech.

That's what I did. You know what? It is far worse in context. If an American president has ever before said something so insulting and disparaging toward an essential American idea (free enterprise), I've not heard it. It's an absolutely chilling speech.

Underneath his speech was a profound loathing of private initiative. No matter what you have done in life, the president thinks the government should get the credit. And why? Because the government built the Hoover Dam (in 1935!), the Golden Gate Bridge (in 1937, built and funded by private funds!), went to the moon (43 years ago!) and invented the Internet (it was privatized in 1995, and only then became mainstream!).

People say that I shouldn't be shocked at this rhetoric. I can't help it. The whole world as we know it is built by human hands operating in a market, yet this guy can't see it. To say the government is the source of prosperity is like saying that the ticks are keeping the dog alive.

Regardless, the market isn't going anywhere. It responds to whatever the reality is, whether distorted by government interventions or not. What will be the end result of the incredible and relentless interventions over the last five years? Whatever it is, it will not be good.
It's individuals voluntarily working together that built the world. Not government taking and redirecting resources to wasteful government programs that only benefit politicians and those with the right political connections.

In a free market, it's not those who are smartest or work hardest or have the right political connections that make the most money. It's those who best serve their fellow man.

If we use Rothbard's definition of a free market:
"Free-market capitalism is a network of free and voluntary exchanges in which producers work, produce, and exchange their products for the products of others through prices voluntarily arrived at."
Then, under such a system, the only way to make money is to actually offer your potential customers something they value.

Think of the 10 sites you use most on the internet. Who built them and who's running them? Is it the government or is it some individual or group of individuals who voluntarily used their time and resources to build that site?

Who built GFY? The government?
Who built Wikipedia? The government?
Who built apache, wordpress, drupal, php, perl, firefox, chrome, photoshop, thunderbird, flashfxp, openssh, acrobat, nero, ms office, kmeleon, media player classic home cinema edition, fsviewer,...? The government?

Even if you don't like to use that definition of a free market, even if you think our current system is somehow a free market, you'll have to admit that all those great things we voluntarily use every day are not the result of some government bureaucrat or government committee taking away resources and deciding how to use them. All those great things are the result of the voluntary cooperation between individuals.

An advocate of a free market does not want every individual to do everything alone. No, the question is: "how do we work together?". Do we want a system of voluntary, mutual beneficial exchanges or do we want a system where the government takes away resources and spends them in such away that it only benefits the government, the bureaucracy behind it, the lobbyists that inevitably flock to it and the politicians that are eventually all the same?

you are making the mistake of thinking that wingnuts can use reason and think logically and gather relevant facts.

look at ubob here - the errors in his logic are so glaring you could drive a truck thru them - but there is simply no chance that he could even see the errors, much less admit them.

wingnuts dont have the integrity required to assess their own psuedo-religious rantings.

christ I can't believe I am posting in a donny thread. I must be bored.

Obama is a liar. He said government research created the internet and we all know full well Al Gore created the internet.

Either way I can't wait till he's out of office.

Question: If you're one of those people who keep running with the lies and half-truths, wouldn't you ever pause and consider that fact if you're always having to do that about the "opposite team."

Yet you can't really name a single thing that he fucked up.
You can try and blame Bush's economy on him, and make up shit about how he
should have let wall street and the auto industry fail, but yet they are thriving after
he made his moves.

You just watch too many whinning assed bitches on Faux News.

Personally I think his full speech is just as bad.

Most of it is him trying to backpeddle from saying the part that has everyone pissed.

Reality is that if the top tax bracket paid 100 percent of their income in federal taxes it still wouldn't even touch the rate of govt. spending...much less pay down the debt.

This is just plain out "class warfare" trying to get all the worker bees out there to vote for him...even though he isn't doing a damn thing for them.

Imagine if the government had taken over food distribution and the selling of food through supermarkets, you would now be saying "If it wasn't for the government we would never have this huge and incredibly complex infrastructure of production, distritibution and sales of food all over the country. Getting enough food to each place in the US. Private business could NEVER do that".

In the meantime I guarentee that our selection and availablity of food would be MUCH worse, and MUCH more expensive. But since the government would be controlling it, we would never know the difference, and statist would all be saying that the government was the only entity big enough to deal with the entire system.

And thank God for government intervention or else we wouldn't be able to brush our teeth!

Think I'm just making this up? When the wall came down and communism came to an end in Eastern Europe, the 'experts' were warning people they should not let that happen. They told people they needed communism. Because, as they said, if the government didn't plan the economy, there would be a shortage of everything. "If the government doesn't plan the economy, you won't be able to brush your teeth because factories won't know how much tooth brushes and tooth paste to produce".

Donny agree with you 100%. It goes for both sides, they are getting ridiculous with the twisting of words. It's like either side cannot wait to see what the other one says in order to pick it apart or just use snippets of sentences.

I don't like either candidate to be honest with you, they both are full of shit politicians who won't do jack when they get into office except help their rich friends who are really the ones who control this countries direction.

I'm actually waiting to see the "mis-quote" here. You could might try to claim that it was "taken out of context", but not "mis-quoted". In any case, in reading the entire speech, especially in the context of his many other recorded remarks on the subject, there is nothing "mis-quoted" OR "taken out of context" about the spread of that phrase.

Inflation is about to skyrocket.

A war with Iran is looking more and more likely.

Unemployment will not drop by much, anytime soon.

All food prices will be going up drastically within the next year.

and on and on.

These things will happen regardless of who is in office.

If it's Obama, he will be blamed.

If it's Romney, he will be blamed.

That is all...
