Deadly count: US averages 20 mass shootings every year

http://rt.com/usa/news/mass-year-people-massacre-710/

All of America has turned its eyes on Aurora, Colorado after a Friday morning shooting left more than a dozen movie-goers dead. But while the latest massacre has scarred millions of Americans, is it only the latest tragedy in a terrible trend?

According to an ongoing tally kept by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the United States is experiencing an average of around 20 mass shootings each year. While Friday morning?s incident inside of a Aurora movie theater has perhaps the unfortunate distinction of being the most violent in recent memory ? taking no fewer than 12 lives and injuring around 50 more ? it is only yet only one example out of many that has marred society this year.

The Aurora massacre is believed to be one of the worst incident on American soil since a rampage at Virginia Tech in 2007 left 32 people dead. The Fort Hood, Texas massacre two years later also ended with massive bloodshed, as well, with 13 people losing their lives in that event.

Since 2005, however, the Brady Campaign says that these events are occurring, at least on some scale, in remarkable numbers.

According to the campaign, who brands itself with the slogan ?sensible gun laws save lives,? the Aurora incident is already the sixth mass shooting in the month of July alone.

Only three days earlier, 17 people were injured in Tuscaloosa, Alabama after a gunman opened fire in a downtown bar. One week prior, three people were killed and two were injured after another rampage erupted during a Dover, Delaware soccer tournament.

In Chicago, Illinois, where the homicide rate for June 2012 was 50 percent higher than just a year earlier, three separate outbursts in only the last 20 days have left four people dead and at least another 13 seriously hurt. So far in 2012, more people have been killed in the metropolitan Midwest city than the number of US servicemen in Afghanistan.

Earlier this month, two suspects fired at least 61 bullets in an outburst in Queens, NY that, while yielded no fatalities, left several people injured ? including children. At the time, the Wall Street Journal reported that the NYPD recorded 730 shooting incidents this year alone, showing a 12 percent increase from the same time in 2011.

"Children are becoming victims more and more in these communities," Rev. Taharka Robinson, founder of the Brooklyn Anti-Violence Coalition, told the Huffington Post after the NYC mass shooting weeks ago. "If you can have an individual spray bullets where children are playing nearby, there's something wrong. We need to get to the root of the problem."

It?s been a sentiment echoed countless times in recent years, especially after the 1999 Columbine, Colorado massacre reintroduced mass shootings as a mainstream issue. Despite continuing pleas, though, the Brady Campaign?s statistics seem to suggest that little is being done to curb the crime.

According to Brady, the number of homicides in America that occurred in 2012 as a result of mass shootings totaled 50, even before Friday?s massacre in Colorado.

The problem isn't guns, it's mentally unstable people going off in public

We have serious issues dealing with mental illness in this country. Until we get to the root of the problem, everyone will just flap their fucking gums about guns and gun control, while playing the blame game...

Its not an issue of dealing with it, Its an issue of getting paid to deal with it. And Obama care WONT fix this. Neither will socialized medicine for those about to say it would.

people have to get over the idea of profiting off everything. fixing these people may not make money but it saves lives and helps society.

The problem is guns. Look at Europe and European law about guns. Mass shooting here? Only in TV when news from USA are on vision.
We have psychos in Europe too, but thanks to rational gun laws shootings here are rare thing.

And oddly they only seem to happen in "safe" "gun free zones" like this theater.

Shit doesnt happen at gun shows or donut shops (aka police stations). They'd be dead on about the second trigger pull.

Ding ding ding

Exactly.

Unfortunately, mental illness is not treated with urgency like medical ailments.

Probably bombs, which will fuck a lot more shit up and are actually much easier to get your hands on then guns. Hell we're were making them out of co2 cartridges as kids and dropping small trees. Change co2 cartridge to those coleman propane tanks and duct tape a pound of metal shards on for shrapnel and ughhhh.. that wouldn't be pretty. But thats just not the same experience as the games these fuckers grew up playing as kids so thats what they use.

Ok, make guns illegal. Now what?

* A small percentage of law abiding citizens turn theirs in.
* A very large percentage of law abiding citizens become criminals when they don't turn theirs in. Do you go door to door searching?
* No criminals turn theirs in.

There are more guns in the US than citizens and they are here to stay.

So how well has the "Brady Bill" worked out?

More laws are for idiots that think people really care about laws when they need to
shoot some fucking body.

It isn't just here in the U.S. really either, I just read about a girl who was in Toronto at the Eaton Center just last month during a mass shooting, and survived. I believe it was July 2nd, and she just happened to get killed at the Aurora, Colorado shooting.

It will change nothing, as you said. USA is full of guns and people will have access, no matter what law you have now. That's a result of decision made by the country leaders many many years ago.

Don't even blame it on "the country".
Blacksmiths made guns in their horse stables.

Once someone used a gun, everybody wanted one.
Blame it on the first person who fired the first shot.

People who blame inanimate objects like guns for this shit are fucking idiots.

There's obviously a psychological problem with these killers, and "guns" didn't create those problems.

If you have to blame something blame America's obsession with death and violence in their entertainment. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this Colorado killer sat around murdering people in a virtual Call of Duty world 18 hours a day.

How ironic is it that people spent their hard-earned money to sit and watch people get shot and they ended up getting shot themselves?

The Eaton centre was apparently gang related as was the one in Scarborough on Monday.

Terrible circumstances in all cases though.

Going further, the problem is the media. Had the first high school shooting never been front page news all over the globe, there would not have been another... and so on. It's a well studied fact that suicides in the news cause a spike in suicides. There is a direct correlation.

It would not occur to people to play out an event like this had they not been aware of the fact that they would be a global celebrity, be discussed for the next 10 years, be the subject of a Michael Moore movie etc etc etc.

Not saying they wouldn't off themselves anyway as we hope they would, just saying the media fuels these events.

? July 22, 2011: Confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik kills 77 in Norway in twin attacks: a bombing in downtown Oslo and a shooting massacre at a youth camp outside the capital. The self-styled anti-Muslim militant admitted both attacks.

? April 30, 2009: Farda Gadyrov, 29, enters the prestigious Azerbaijan State Oil Academy in the capital, Baku, armed with an automatic pistol and clips. He kills 12 people before killing himself as police close in.

? Sept. 23, 2008: Matti Saari, 22, walks into a vocational college in Kauhajoki, Finland, and opens fire, killing 10 people and burning their bodies with firebombs before shooting himself fatally in the head.

? Nov. 7, 2007: After revealing plans for his attack in YouTube postings, 18-year-old Pekka-Eric Auvinen fires kills eight people at his high school in Tuusula, Finland.

? April 26, 2002: Robert Steinhaeuser, 19, who had been expelled from school in Erfurt, Germany, kills 13 teachers, two former classmates and policeman, before committing suicide.

? April 28, 1996: Martin Bryant, 29, bursts into cafeteria in seaside resort of Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia, shooting 20 people to death. Driving away, he kills 15 others. He was captured and imprisoned.

? March 13, 1996: Thomas Hamilton, 43, kills 16 kindergarten children and their teacher in elementary school in Dunblane, Scotland, and then kills himself.

? Dec. 6, 1989: Marc Lepine, 25, bursts into Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique college, shooting at women he encounters, killing nine and then himself.

? Aug. 19, 1987: Michael Ryan, 27, kills 16 people in small market town of Hungerford, England, and then shoots himself dead after being cornered by police.

So, it doesn't happen in Europe, it's just the U.S., right? Righhhhhhhhht

There is alsol free healthcare in europe.

Best solution is healthcare, especially mental health, should be free.
Second option could be to remove guns from the streets.
Third option could be ongoing mental care for anyone that wish to carry a gun.

Probably the third option is the one that's easiest to implement.

Stop saying the problem isn't guns... Guns are PART of the problem. Thing is yes, some people are sain enough to own/carry a gun but fact is... The gun is used to kill, therefore it is part of the problem.

Gun ownership is not monitored well enough.

Nice list. Now compose a list about how often it happens in USA and how often in Europe.

The blame game always seems like deliberate misdirection. Pin it on someone or something, so that you don't have to deal with the real issues.

What people want is truth. This is especially so for the mentally ill, because there isn't too much difference between mental noise and media lies. Science won't be curing serious mental disorders anytime soon, but a little truth could go a long way.

I am not arguing that. I am merely pointing out that it is not as rare in Europe as you would let on.

There are nuts everywhere.

But then what happens is those countries implement tighter gun control, which prevents it happening again. IOW, like even the stupidest monkey does, they learn from mistakes. Something that seems to escape many Americans.

I thought what I said was clear. Here it is again: after shootings in other countries, those countries decide to make it harder for people to get firearms. This in turn makes it harder for people to go kill crazy with a firearm in future. In other words, it saves lives.

Contrast this with the USA, where after spree shootings nobody does a thing to make it harder to obtain firearms, and a few months down the line, the same thing happens again.

That is because the right to bear arms is in the bill of rights. If they want to take away guns in the U.S. it will require a constitutional amendment which is a fairly long process usually. They do try to pass various laws to control it but many of them get tossed as unconstitutional by the courts.

Exactly.

Train every citizen that is allowed to own a gun, issue them a CCW and a gun. Make it their civic duty to be a protector. Watch the crime rate fall. Criminals are cowards and they wont be on the attack when they know they will get perforated in return.

Nobody will be disarming the USA, so everybody may as well quit squawking about that.

Couldn't agree more. And despite what some cops might lead you to believe, you can carry your gun, out in the open, without having to prove shit unless they suspect you of committing a crime. Now of course, 9 times out of 10 it won't be recorded and the cop will unjustly arrest a guy like this anyhow.

Case and point:

So, it doesn't happen in Europe, it's just the U.S., right? Righhhhhhhhht

.
Now factor in how often shootings happens there and then how often they happen in the US. It's not even close, the US has more deaths by guns than everyone of those countries combined.

Cops frequently try to use someone's ignorance against them. This guy had his shit in order, good for him.
