Seven Reasons Why Google Is Making A Mistake In Filtering Searches Based On DMCA Notices

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201...-notices.shtml

Quote:
This won't hold back infringement. At all. The underlying rationale for this is that the RIAA and MPAA think that people searching for content online are too stupid to realize the difference between a paid link and a free link. They think that if someone does a search on the name of a movie along with "free online," that if they're shown an authorized fee-based offer, they're willing to pay for it. There's little evidence to support that. The people doing such searches know exactly what they're looking for. The real problem is not that Google is showing it to them, it's that the traditional entertainment industry players aren't providing users what they want.
this one is the most relevent reason btw

people will just append the name of the pirate site to the search query, since Google is not delisting the sites

and extra keyword is unique enough that showing the "authorized" competitors would actually represent trademark jacking Google is going to still show that content to the people who want it.

It's often/usually/always quicker to find something specific on a site via Google than via the site itself.

Pretty much, probably all bookmarked. The only difference I can see this making is casual porn viewers might see less torrent/tube sites on the first few pages of Google and more actual legal porn sites.

Hey Gallbladder, still looking for work ?

I heard that Johnnyclips is looking for a business partner !!

Now he is really looking for an up front investment so you might struggle making the grade, but you could offer to consult on how best to have your content stolen but then go onto profit enormously form the said theft.

He actually GG has a point.

Assuming people are too stupid to go through pages to find the free stuff, is insulting them.

To assume less DMCAs received because a piracy site is on page 5 is stupid.

Only way to cut the DMCAs, which is the reason, is to not list sites involved in piracy. And the Google searchers will become Yahoo searchers. So buy Yahoo shares.

when I want to find something on gfy I go to google the search function on here requires you to wait between searches. But it must be a sad day for tubes. But they are also the main link buyers and most of the last major updates on google seems geared toward combating link buyers.

Its openning up a big can of worms.
If you CAN filter results like this which is now a fact then if you choose to continuesly prioritize piracy websites it should not be difficult to show that its a choice you made because of the requests you receive and the revenues it generates and that its no longer a technology barrier.
If google does it so can yahoo.
Its nice to see piracy is getting cleaned up.. next step will probably be the IRS going after piracy sites. Isn't there some laws saying you can't use tax writeoffs from ill gotten gains and its double taxed ?

Google IS a mistake. Google directs everyone to the most popular sites in lieu of sending their visitors to the most relevant sites. They're chasing Facebook.

Social media and "popularity" have nothing to do with actual, concrete information. Google is a a joke. Nice traffic. Profitable. But soon to be useless.

+YOU!

Google has already announced that this rule will exempt youtube from being de-listed.
Prime example of selective enforcement of dictatorial rules.

It'll be a sad day for tubes if content owners and anti-piracy organizations start blanketing Google with legitimate DMCA violations on those tubes. As it is now it looks doubtful they will get hit much.

did you even read the article or the quote

it not going to hurt pirate sites it going to hurt google.

Quote:
Google's defense in anti-trust cases just got that much more difficult: Google has always argued in the antitrust efforts against them, that the ratings results are the best for users, not for any particular business. But this new effort will be pointed out time and time again to show that's not always the case, as those on the other side of antitrust fights will start asking why the RIAA and MPAA get special treatment, but others can't.
the pirate sites are not going to see any damage
hell if the pirate bay or an non youtube tube site want to get millions of dollars in free publicity they could sue google for anti trust violations for their actions.

Simply because they exempted their own tube site and penalized all their competitors.

they wouldn't even need to win, just sue and send out press releases.

This is what I said. If google will stop to show useful results for "namemovie torrent" searches, then google will lose these user's traffic. The users will start to use other search engines (bing, yahoo), or simply specific pirate search engines.
Unsure how many pirate searches is made with google but could even be 5% or more of whole google traffic to drop here - prepare your alexa ranks to see google drop
