Houston cops shoot and kill double amputee in wheelchair

HOUSTON ? A Houston police officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair Saturday inside a group home after police say the double amputee threatened the officer and aggressively waved a metal object that turned out to be a pen.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer in his wheelchair and was making threats while trying to stab the officer with the pen. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said.

She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still.

"Fearing for his partner's safety and his own safety, he discharged his weapon," Silva told The Associated Press.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man who was killed. They had been called to the home after a caretaker there called and reported that the man in wheelchair was causing a disturbance.

The owner of the group home, John Garcia, told the Houston Chronicle that the man had a history of mental illness and had been living at the house about 18 months. Garcia said the man had told him that he lost a leg above the knee and all of one arm when he was hit by a train.

"He sometimes would go off a bit, but you just ignore it," Garcia told the newspaper.

Silva identified the officer as Matthew Jacob Marin, a five-year veteran of the department. He was immediately placed on three-day administrative leave, which is standard in all shootings involving officers.

Houston police records indicate that Marin also fatally shot a suspect in 2009. Investigators at the time said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and opened fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife.

Never understand how such a scum (that's not a first murder for that "policeman") sleeps at night. I also have no idea why the killer is not in jail. Is that ok for the USA to be a police officer and kill the people left and right?

In addition to all of the basic police training, there should be some kind of mental test to determine if a trainee is a little bitch. Weed out the suckers at the beginning stages and this shit would happen a lot less.

What should a cop do if they enter a group home where a mentally ill person is threatening you with an unidentified object?
Add to it that this person already lost 2 body parts and is stuck to a wheel chair (he probably does not have much left to loose ? )

There was a lot more leading up to it but I could never be a cop simply because my brain can't process fast enough in those instances of whether to pull the trigger.

i.e. he kills me or perhaps the person is innocent and it screws over the rest of my life with the decision just made.

My mom was s deputy sheriff in the 1970's. I have a stepbrother and two cousins who are city cops.

I think it has nothing to do with cops being "scared" and a lot more to do with them having the ability to pretty much do anything they want to you these days.

I was around the sheriffs dept. every day growing up as a kid. Rode with deputies, watched them work, etc.

As a teenager I had my share of being a young hoodlum and having run-ins with city cops.

As a young man in the 1980's living down in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami palying in bands at every bar in Southern Fla. I had plenty of interactions with cops.

Things were a LOT different back then.
I can remember being pulled over by the cops and arguing with them and even getting into heated arguments. Same with cops on foot patrol on the Ft. Lauderdale strip during spring break in the 1980's.

Back then they weren't allowed to just search you, you didn't have to "obey" their "commands", they couldn't search your car or your girlfriend's purse, etc.

Fast forward to 2012: I wouldn't DARE even ask a cop "why am I being pulled over"

And yeah, they shoot people all the time and never face any consequences.

Here in Vegas there have been an all time record of cops shooting and killing people in 2012. Not one cop has been charged with anything.

Over the years the govt. has given them more and more power as part of the failed "drug war". They really are a bit out of control.

I remember when you could literally tell a cop "no" when they "ordered" you around (not talking about a situation where you are being arrested, but just a normal interaction on the street or at a concert event).

Try that now and you'll get your ass beat, handcuffed, and thrown in the back of the police car and off to jail.
