Modern wheat a "perfect, chronic poison," doctor says

Davis said that the wheat we eat these days isn't the wheat your grandma had: "It's an 18-inch tall plant created by genetic research in the '60s and '70s," he said on "CBS This Morning." "This thing has many new features nobody told you about, such as there's a new protein in this thing called gliadin. It's not gluten. I'm not addressing people with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease. I'm talking about everybody else because everybody else is susceptible to the gliadin protein that is an opiate. This thing binds into the opiate receptors in your brain and in most people stimulates appetite, such that we consume 440 more calories per day, 365 days per year."

Asked if the farming industry could change back to the grain it formerly produced, Davis said it could, but it would not be economically feasible because it yields less per acre. However, Davis said a movement has begun with people turning away from wheat - and dropping substantial weight.

"If three people lost eight pounds, big deal," he said. "But we're seeing hundreds of thousands of people losing 30, 80, 150 pounds. Diabetics become no longer diabetic; people with arthritis having dramatic relief. People losing leg swelling, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and on and on every day."

Search Bush Administration and Monsanto ties, and you'll see nothing much has changed.

The problem is recent. Up to 1980 we rarely saw a fat person. Now we see them everywhere. Young Czech people in the last 10 years have also put on a lot of weight.

thats the easy way to look at it but it seems to be more complex than that. there are other studies that say continued exposure to certain kinds of plastics causes people to gain weight. i only eat organic cereals and try to not eat much bread. i also recently stopped using water bottles and switched to filtering my own water as well as stopping the use of plastic containers to store/heat food. i am far from fat at all but i don't like this GMO shit. its not done for health or anything, its all about profit. its not natural.

First, you are entitled to believe and do anything you want unless prohibited by law. No one can tell you that making those choices aren't better choices as their is no downside. However, the GMO hysteria has always been proven to be exactly that. Furthermore, a huge % of the world population is starving to death as a result. Little children are dying every single day because of a silly myth started in Britain by a single man.

I've read studies that say bigfoot exists. Studies that say Cocaine is really good for you. etc etc. Studies are studies.

It's not an "easy way to look at it". Food is energy. Your body burns energy to live. You take in X amount of energy each day... you burn X amount of energy each day. At the end of the day, you either break even (or thereabouts), have a deficit or surplus.

People are done a tremendous disservice by continually being bombarded with the message "it isn't your fault". It is your fault. The USA and the rest of the world is driving itself over a cliff of self entitlement, of being special, of never being wrong where the notion of personal accountability is a thing of the past as a result because any excuse is now acceptable.

I own a gym. Our business is weight loss and getting our members results. Everyone follows the same meal plans, same workout plans and its all very basic. It's all very basic, because its a simple issue of calories in vs calories out. That's all you need to manage. Your body can't store fat by consuming less calories than you burn. That is a simple, indisputable fact. This is true of every gym, of every weight loss program in existence. No one in the fitness industry or weight loss industry (Jenny Craig etc) asks "uhm... are you using plastic containers? if so, that could be the problem" because it has no bearing on anyone's weight loss results.

EVERY diet in existence requires you to consume fewer calories than you burn no matter what the hook is. As an example, HCG is a huge diet right now and "HCG" is touted to cause weight loss in conjunction with other benefits. People seem to willingly overlook the fact that the diet also comes with a 500 calorie a day meal plan. People also remain largely unaware of the fact that this has been studied to death in the medical community and HCG has been proven time and time again to play no role whatsoever in weight loss.

Weight loss is not an abstract idea or concept where anything and everything is possible... its nothing more than the second law of thermodynamics and second grade math at work.

You can't put enough gas in your tank to drive 5 miles, then drive 5 miles and end up with a gallon left over. It's a comforting idea to those who refuse to hold themselves accountable, but its obviously not possible.

i totally agree with you - i lost weight by simply eating less calories than i burned. even without sports.

but i still think that genetically altered food should be outlawed

so you don't think that exposure to things i mentioned could inhibit weight loss despite limited calories? i really can't say for myself as there is no extra weight on me to lose but if chemicals in certain plastics/gmo foods do trigger the body to store fat, then i would imagine despite limiting calories you are not going to lose weight as quickly or as much.

Well, I think we are using very gray language. "inhibit weight loss". That has no real meaning or clear definition. It's an idea... more specifically a researchers conclusion based on his / her study or observations. I could make the arguments that eating certain types of foods is preferable to others to accelerate or support or "inhibit weight loss". However, that would not change the fact that if you are burning 2000 calories a day and eating 1200 calories per day... you still have a 800 calorie per day deficit. With 1 pound of fat being 3500 calories, you would be down over 1 pound of fat a week. One could easily argue forever of all the nuance, myth, misunderstandings, "studies", claims etc etc etc. It won't change the fact that burning more calories than you consume is 95%+ of weight loss.

My point or concern was more that people shouldn't be told to look for blame or causes beyond understanding what they are putting into your mouth to begin with. That is the biggest problem of the USA. People eat like shit. Lifestyles are increasingly sedentary. Any European here that has been to an average restaurant in the US and ordered food shared the same "what the fuck!!!!" moment as they saw the portion sizes. People in the USA have zero perspective on how they should be eating, how much they should be eating and portion sizes. Blaming plastic bottles and containers when one is eating horribly to begin with is not helping anyone.

I have a trainer that works for me that's young, has 9% body fat (clearly defined abs). He requires about 5000 calories a day to maintain (no weight loss/no weight gain). Life is not fair, in some respects there is a great deal of individuality as it pertains to each persons physiology... but of all things, one thing remains constant with respect to this conversation... the laws of physics and namely, thermodynamics and how it applies to energy consumption, storage and expenditure in the human body.

It's not true to a certain extent. It's an absolute fact. You are confusing things which might influence weight gain or loss, metabolic efficiency, thyroid, energy levels etc etc etc with the very simple fact that you can't gain weight without eating more calories than you burn.

And... oh great. One more "diet" of the many 1000s of diets that all make some claim that they have some benefit or are somehow based on a unique principle,... yet all seem to require you to eat fewer calories than you burn. Imagine that.

You don't even seem to understand what "metabolism" means. And no, you can't eat 800 calories a day, burn 1000 calories a day and get "fat". Thats something that fat women love to believe. Unless your body has completely shut down and you have major medical issues, its totally absurd to think that.

You can't put enough gas in your car to drive 10 miles every day, then magically drive 12 miles every day and somehow end up with gas left over.

I suppose a better way to have said it with respect to "eating 800 calories a day and gaining weight" is that if you were a 5'7" female in a wheel chair with absolutely no use of your arms or legs, your body would still be burning 800+ calories a day to maintain itself and function... so no, you wouldn't be "getting fat" at 800 calories a day. A person who has use of their arms and legs certainly has no excuse as even walking for 1 hr a day for a very overweight person would burn 500+ calories.
