Does it matter how big the files are, or just how many of them there are?

Do I need to buy a new server if it gets full?

Could the two servers "talk" to each other, or do I need to split my site up across domains because it's two servers?

Just asking in advance for DVTimes so he doesn't have to embarrass himself again.

Yes that is possible, it might very well be that it seems you still have several GB available while you can't store any additional files. This is caused by the amount of inodes on a filesystem.
You can check how many inodes a file is using by ls -i filename
The total inodes on a filesystem can be checked by df -i or tune2fs -l /dev/sdXX

I asked an old friend about this (this guy knows everything about everything, not even kidding) and he said you obviously made this stuff up. There's no such things as inodes, and that there's no way I can issue commands in a GUI anyway.

He told me to tell you you're an idiot.

Also, he said the answer to my problem was something about magic joins? Over my head I think.

As soon as you have 3500 files on your server it will start deleting magic join links.
You will gain the ability to have extra links by having at least 1 toilet with running water and electricity per 16 hours of video (21 if it is mobile content) in your members area
