That's pretty much it's only selling point.

It is that selling point alone that may just make it the number 1 search engine. If you remember, Google started out in a similar way, promoting itself as the small guy verse the big brother yahoo and msn. The only problem with Google was it became the evil.

There are a lot of people who hate Google and using DuckDuckGo is a nice way of paying out on the google monster.

I love it. I get some hits from it but more importantly I dig their philosophy. Webmasters should promote this SE hard because if you think Panda was rough, brace yourself for worse. The days of autopilot webmastering is over. Google's "quality" demands, while well meaning, just crashes head on with how 80% of webmasters operate. Remember the 80/20 rule

yeah blekko is nice. It looks like it's actually giving more importance to keywords in domain name comparing to google.

Blekko is bad news. If some teenager at Blekko decides they dont like your website it is blacklisted for ever. If one of the editors at Blekko has a website in competition with you then your website can get blacklisted. Blekko is the ultimate disaster for webmasters, stay right away from supporting it.

I love DuckDuckGo too. And agreed, they have a great philosophy that is good news for small webmasters. We should as webmasters be promoting it, and I do. The problem is most webmasters complain about Google but do nothing. Here is a good opportunity for us to fight back and promote a quality search engine for us small webmasters, but the big question is how can we get webmasters organized here on this?

Blekko is actually a very poor search engine, DuckDuckGo however are much better.

Blekko, as mentioned, is open to abuse and there have been instances already of vote down wars between different groups to get rid of search results. It's a problem that goes outside what was intended by the developers however it's been difficult for them to solve without killing much of the idea behind Blekko.

DuckDuckGo uses a much more advanced system of filtering spam sites, it seems effective so far.

Lol... Blekko was created by one of the founders of the Open Directory Project. He's done work for Sun, Aol, Netscape, and other crap... him and his partner run Blekko and are far from teenagers.

It's MUCH more than a search engine, it's a research engine!

I think he meant that if some people flag your site as spam, then you drop out of the results.

They must have changed that since I first looked at it, I had the impression it was universal initially.

How are they going to compete with "don't know something - Google it"?

"don't know something - DuckDuckGo it" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Like many others im also ranking well in DuckDuckDo, in fact better then any other search engine. What im noticing is they seem to give preference to small webmasters. Maybe thats why people on this forum are ranking so well. But again, how can we collectively help to promote this search engine?

Im wondering if we could form some sort of supporters group? Any ideas?

adult media outlets like AVN, Xbiz etc to do stories on it, that would help a bit to spread the word in this industry.
also as i said i am listing it on sites as a search method above the others, so on your enter page you have "Exit Here If you Are not of legal age" or whatever instead of linking to Google, link it to DuckDuckGo.com.

i need to check out their widgets to see what they have as well.

i'd love to see this one get very popular.

That's true, it is only an advanced meta search engine, Bing does the actual web crawling for the bulk of the index.

Placing to link on the "Exit Here If you Are not of legal age" is a good idea. Thankyou. Hopefully others here might do the same. Lets try and give google some competition.

You can post a question on their forum about this and they should advice you. I have never submitted to it and all my websites are listed on it.

Just having a look at Alexa and it seems their traffic in the last few weeks is really taking off...http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/duckduckgo.com# I guess they must have been getting some good publicity.
What I can say about DuckDuckGo is that this is the first real search engine that I believe can overtake Google, Bing and Yahoo.

I have been posting all around the various webmaster forums about it and it is getting a lot of attention. The thing I keep reading is how people keep posting how good their websites are showing in the serps on DuckDuckgo.

If you allow Bing to crawl your site then there is no need to submit to the site. It uses Bing for core search results and add other 'meta' searches into the mix according to relevance.

Unless he already has commercial arrangements in place, Bing is going to want to charge for that data at some stage I would imagine.

Perhaps his goal is to get enough support to be able to justify crawling the web himself.

I dont understand the tech behind all this but am I correct in guessing that ixquick.com is using a similar structure?

Was just looking at the stats and they are growing very fast. They are still a long way off the big search engines, but if they continue to grow at this rate within 12 months from now their going to be challenging Google and Bing.....

Yes, basically what DuckDuckGo does is collects structural information which it uses to order search results, so it grabs information from places like wikipedia, bing, etc and reprocesses them to display results. Duck Duck Go doesn't actually independently crawl the entire web like Bing and Google do. It is dependent on other search engines to do that and store the huge amounts of data. Apparently he uses less than 1TB of disk for the entire platform.

Well he is doing a much better job of it then ixquick.com. I suspect its only a matter of time before we see a few more search engines like these two enter the market doing the same thing. I guess you could call them scrappers. In the end, I must admit I like them. And if I had the ability Id be looking to do the same.

At the end of the day though, they are reliant on others crawling efforts. This is a problem, because if something doesn't appear in the Bing index then it is unlikely to appear in DuckDuckGo results unless DuckDuckGo crawls those sites itself.

They do mention they also have their own crawler....http://duckduckgo.com/duckduckbot.html

It may be as time goes by they may develop and rely on that crawler more.

From their website....Where do you get your results?
From over 30 sources, including DuckDuckBot (our own crawler), crowd-sourced sites (in our own index), Yahoo! BOSS, embed.ly, WolframAlpha, EntireWeb, Bing & Blekko.

Any idea how many servers their using to power all this?

Blekko look like a joke, especially if ODP people are founders where you needed to pay editor 5000$ if you want to add your link there.

Nice search engine, but DuckDuckGo? Isn't that a game we all played when we were 3? "Duck, duck, duck, duck, goose!"

Just seems a weird name of a search engine. "Just Google it" versus "Just DuckDuckGo it".

You are right, Blekko is the biggest joke on the internet and I will give you a classic example of just how pathetic this search engine is and why their heading in the wrong direction.

A while ago there was a discussion on Blekko on one of the webmaster forums, everyone was given a challenge to find very hard to get information on the internet using Google, Bing and Blekko search. In the end we could only find 3 websites on the internet with the information. All three were listed in the top 5 serps on google and bing. Blekko had none. And the reason why blekko had none was because they had banned the only websites that actually had the information. And that is why Blekko are idiots and their search engine is a joke. All they do is sit around banning websites till they have now got to the point that no-one can find the information their seeking on blekko because its all banned. Talk about a bunch of idiots that run blekko. Blekko need to stop banning websites and start focusing on delivering the best results.

From their website....

What's with the name?
It is derived from Duck Duck Goose, but it's not a metaphor?really. If you're wondering how you would turn that into a verb...Duck it!

Yes, I guess that is true..

I don't think they'll make the same mistake twice though.
