Just read this, however it does not affect people that have PO Boxes at the Post Office which I do.

Looks like people will be bitching here about not getting checks until Monday sometime around August 7th... just a guess.

Yeah, no doubt... but the loss of employment in the long run would be tremendous. My dad retired from the PO in Boston.

As great and efficient as automation is, when you start to think about it's long term effects, well, it kind of gets scary. Can you imagine all of those mail truck men and women out of work? Fuck...

No one needs 6 day a week mail delivery. I would rather see Monday, Wednesday, Friday delivery and a healthy post office system.

So what if your checks arrive ONE day later? So what if your electric or cable bill comes one day later.

.

So what if the check you sent for mortgage or rent arrives one day later? Oh right, you get hit with a late fee.

Honestly, it should be moved to MWF just so that people would stop using the archaic system altogether.

Then they aren't saving money when they could. USPS has a flat rate option, super reasonable. Ranges are $5.15 to $16.95 for Priority which delivers in 3-5 days with a tracking number.

We use USPS for all of our shipping needs for another business we run and it's awesome. One of the best online systems and super easy with the integration into PayPal.

Some people still ship physical goods and the USPS is more affordable and fast.

The USPS is ridiculous and a reflection of just how shitty our government is at managing things. The USPS, a run by the US government, has been hemorrhaging money for years. Meanwhile, rival private companies such as FedEx and UPS have been doing just fine. To me that speaks volumes about how well our government here handles things. Maybe the USPS should shut down completely and let private companies like DHL handle the mail.

The USPS is profitable. However, Congress put a mandate on them to pay out billions for 75 years of future retirees and in just a few years. Like I said, they have a great service. It's sad that they are going under because of a retarded mandate.

I agree with this and it would save tons of money. They do this with trash, right? If they told you that it would lower your taxes or cut mail prices down then you'd do it. UPS and Fedex prices are getting out of control.

ok packages wont be affected

The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday that it plans to end Saturday mail delivery, in one of the most significant steps taken to date to cut costs at the struggling agency.

Patrick R. Donahoe, postmaster general and CEO, said at a press conference that the move is "absolutely necessary" as part of a broader effort to stabilize the service's troubled finances.

"Making this change to our delivery schedule is a big-ticket item," he said. "It would be irresponsible for the Postal Service not to pursue this course."

Under the proposal, the Postal Service will continue to deliver packages six days a week. The plan, which is aimed at saving about $2 billion, would start to take effect in August.

It's unclear, though, how the service can eliminate Saturday mail delivery without congressional approval.

For the past 30 years, Congress -- which oversees the otherwise independent agency -- has included a provision insisting on Saturday delivery. That provision still stands, leaving some on the Hill bewildered about the announcement Wednesday.

Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said Wednesday that the move "flouts the will of Congress."

"Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe's plan to end Saturday delivery is a disastrous idea that would have a profoundly negative effect on the Postal Service and on millions of customers," Rolando said in a statement. "It would be particularly harmful to small businesses, rural communities, the elderly, the disabled and others who depend on Saturday delivery for commerce and communication."

But Donahoe said "we think we're on good footing with this." He noted that the law governing the agency's operations expires at the end of March, and said if there's any disagreement it can be resolved by then.

The announcement garnered support from two Republicans on Capitol Hill, California Rep. Darrell Issa and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn. They called the move a "common-sense reform" that would save money.

The agency clearly thinks it has a majority of the American public on its side regarding the change. Material prepared for the Wednesday press conference said Postal Service market research and other research has indicated that nearly 7 in 10 Americans support the switch to five-day delivery as a way for the Postal Service to reduce costs.

Donahoe noted Wednesday that the agency posted a nearly $16 billion loss last year. "By any measure, that is unsustainable and it's unacceptable," he said.

The agency previously looked at ending both mail and package delivery on Saturdays. The move to preserve weekend package delivery accentuates one of the agency's strong points -- package delivery has increased by 14 percent since 2010, officials say, while the delivery of letters and other mail has declined with the increasing use of email and other Internet use.

Under the new plan, mail would still be delivered to post office boxes on Saturdays. Post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open on Saturdays.

Over the past several years, the Postal Service has advocated shifting to a five-day delivery schedule for mail and packages -- and it repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, appealed to Congress to approve the move. Though an independent agency, the service gets no tax dollars for its day-to-day operations but is subject to congressional control.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Recently our garbage collection went from 2 days to 1. No big deal at all except now I have to pay attention I don't forget or I have to wait an entire week. But again no big deal.

Note, even though service was cut in half the bill stayed the same???

Using anything other than FedEx and UPS is not an option.

Expense isn't even a consideration. You care about reliability.

I can't remember the last time I was sent something via the USPS that it actually arrived.

I normally end up driving 20 miles to pick the fucking thing up because the USPS is so inefficient and mismanaged that they can't even get a package to an address.

The US Post Office is getting screwed. All of the mail they used to deliver... Is now done via email. We used to write letters to each other, now we send email. Bills too - I get my bills from email these days. What I get the most of these days from my mailbox is fucking junk mail.

Direct TV is the worst.

Thank you for the first correct answer.

Most commercial diamond shipments in the past arrived in the USA by mail - obviously not insured.

In more than 20 years in business I can honestly say, I never had to cancel a check that I sent that didn't arrive at the other end. One item I ordered from amazon was tracked to my Post office but somehow never made it to my box. Amazon replaced it at no charge.

You're lucky you have mail at all. Where I am the mail sucks so much, they always lose my packets or i have to go to the post office and ask for something i should have gotten a month ago. Not surprizingly, the post men always find me when they deliver bills... But when i need the post for something... forget it. I'd rather bring it myself.
