Haven't seen Drive, but Chasing Amy has no chasing, and none of the characters are named Amy.

That's all fine, except for the small fact that all the marketing and trailers made it look like an action film based on driving... not a documentary of a mopey idiot wandering around his apartment.

It's more fun to not get exactly what you expected. Right?

The lighting and shots alone tell a story within a story so watch it again.

And because this is America a woman sued them for having a misleading trailer.

I shit you not;

"As WDIV-TV in Detroit reports, Sarah Deming's suit claims that FilmDistrict and Emagine Novi Theater violated Michigan's Consumer Protection Act by releasing such a disingenuous advertisement for their driving-deficient crap-film"

It doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator, so most movie goers just don't get it.

Drive wasn't bad. Over styled, looked like a music video. I enjoyed all the violent deaths, though.

I seem to recall another chase scene with a Chrysler 300 and a Mustang. Not overly long though.

Ok, but your unfulfilled expectations don't make a movie bad. It's pretty highly regarded as a good noir film. Some advice is to watch a movie for what it is, instead of what you had built up in your head and you might find more enjoyment. Not being a dick...just saying to try it sometime.

...and Drive does have some driving in it.

I was watching Point Break last night, and had the thought that there aren't too many movies with good old fashioned French Connection style car chases anymore. Point Break had an awesome car chase(but short), with great camera work and you can hear the engines red-lining. The foot chase after that was epic.

If I was going to recall anything recent -- Jack Reacher had a serious car chase.

Fast Five had some real metal on metal car stunt work, but I think some was probably CG enhanced.

Terminator 3 had a masterpiece of a car chase.

This one has to be my favorite of all time...

since when does a trailer factor in whether a movie is good or not? Have you seen the trailer for the usual suspects? what does that movie seem like in that?

it was the best of the year easily.

They are unrelated - I didn't say they were related.

1) The trailer was done in a way to make it look like something it wasn't
2) It was a shitty film no matter what anyone was expecting

I wish more trailers would be more mysterious and not try to show you the whole movie. It's great to find out a movie is about something other than you expected, but maybe that's just me.

What I hate are comedies that have the only two funny parts on the trailer.

Wasn't that actually the premise of a movie - that the movie was about the filming of a movie and they used the footage for the bogus "movie" in their theatrical trailers? I want to say it was The Big Picture.

I knew a lot of people who were surprised when From Dusk Til Dawn turned out to be a vampire flick. Apparently everything they had seen about it suggested it was mainly about Clooney and Tarantino on the lam and taking a family hostage.

I wanted to see more of him being a getaway driver. The one chase scene with the Mustang and 300 was cool, but overall the movie was a little slow.

And the vampires part made the movie better, right?

I remember being into Woody Allen, and I went to see Small Time Crooks. The trailer showed nothing except that the movie was about a bunch of bumbling crooks trying to rob a bank. When I saw the movie, it was actually nothing like the trailer.

Their plan was to start a bakery next door, so they could drill through the wall. So Woody Allen's wife does the baking for their "fake" bakery and makes these great cookies that everyone in town starts loving. He spends a long time getting his bank robbing plan together, while the bakery starts raking in money. Then suddenly she blows up like the next Martha Stewart and they're rich as fuck and start fighting over money for the rest of the movie. There probably is a trailer that shows them being rich too, but the one I saw had nothing about that.

That was probably when I quit worrying about trailers, and try to know as little as possible about a flick before going in. As long as I hear its good, that's all I want to know.

Yeah, if 93% of critics like a movie, the other 7% probably aren't some misunderstood geniuses. Whenever a Pixar movie comes out, there's always one asshole reviewer out of 200 who has to dislike it.

Of course, and every single animated movie that comes out gets rave reviews because its all about great writing, hreat acting, great directing an a solid, well told story.

Far too derivative of Shane(1953), Thief (1981) and The Driver (1978) to have any artistic merit.

But that's one of the reasons why it's so *awesome*! Plus William Petersen's wang.

Even if you did or didn't like Drive, you must check out the director's earlier trilogy of Danish films about dirty drug dealings:

Pusher

Pusher II

Pusher III

"Drive has earned Nicolas Winding Refn more attention from the general cinephile community but, in reality, the Danish filmmaker has been crafting artistic genre meditations ? infused with strokes of brutal violence and style ? beginning with the first installment in his grisly Pusher trilogy back in 1996." source: IMDB

I was angry that he couldn't act and I had to suffer through a shitty, slow paced story, with no action to compensate, which consisted mostly of a guy who spoke less than 10 lines as the main star just hanging out in his apartment. Had the marketing reflected what it actually was, I never would have liked it. I think you're just mad because I don't appreciate Ryan Gosling with his shirt off.

If you went to watch The Hobbit, only to find out its about a guy named Rupert Hobbit who runs a beat farm in New Foundland, you'd have pretty solid grounds for being disappointed.

Probably the same reason we park in the driveway and drive in the parkway.

uh huh -- If that is the case, then old mate directing should have his ass raped for making a movie that does not appeal to fuck all people

I did not mind the movie, however a bit more talking from the main character and not his constipated looks would have helped.

I do not understand why anyone would ever wnat to see a movie similar or even close to transporter. It was one of the biggest piece of shit movies ever, stupid idiotic car scenes where cars break all rules of physics - we will not mention any of the fighting or *acting* or storyline.

Yup and you have to sit through 2 hours of crap for the bits you have already seen and are no longer funny - Ted is a great example of this.

I agree with what you're saying. You're obviously a pretty smart guy if you'd like to skip all that stupid subtext stuff and have the characters say their exact feelings, so you can conserve brainpower for algebra equations later.

haha it's funny that people expect to see in the movie exactly what's in the title. They should start naming movies as paragraphs describing everything that happens in the movie.
