Congratulations to Gomer, as he finally tied the knot and married his partner of the past 38 years.

Gomer Pyle just got hitched

Jim Nabors, the 82-year-old actor beloved for playing everyone's favorite naïve but good-natured Marine in the classic TV series, quietly married his longtime companion.

Per Hawaii News Now, which broke the story, Nabors and 64-year-old Stan Cadwallader made it official on Jan. 15 in a low-key ceremony at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, after gay marriage became legal in Washington State in December.

"I'm 82 and he's in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years, and I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing I didn't tell anybody," The Andy Griffith Show alum and longtime Hawaii resident told the station. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."

Nabors said that with gay couples now gaining equal rights under the law, it was important for them to tie the knot to ensure both he and his partner are protected legally should one of them, say, become sick or god forbid pass away.

"It's pretty obvious that we had no rights as a couple, yet when you've been together 38 years, I think something's got to happen there, you've got to solidify something. And at my age, it's probably the best thing to do," noted Nabors, who underwent open-heart surgery last May.

This is a good story at this time, since Nabors is sort of an all-American icon (wholesome TV shows, singing annually at the Indy 500, numerous Christmas/spiritual songs, etc).

It might cause a few folks, especially some of the elderly, to take a fresh look at gay marriage, and why gay people would be denied the same rights granted to straight people.

I recall that we used to joke about Gomer's pile when i was a kid, but that's all I recall, so finding out he is gay was news to me.



There apparently was a rumor circulating that Jim Nabors and Rock Hudson were secretly married:

An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the 1970s. In fact, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of "middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach" who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together.

One year, the group invited its members to witness "the marriage of Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors," at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors' most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming "Rock Pyle."

Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. At the time Nabors was dating his boyfriend, Stan, whom he eventually married; Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors and Hudson never spoke to each other again.
